FOOLING AROUND (1)
'Fool! Tonight you die. And your barnful of goods-who gets it?' Luke 12:20
Gimme, gimme, gimme, more, more, more! It's easy to become consumed with getting stuff, the latest, coolest, trendiest ... things. Or our image: Let's spruce ourselves up and look the part, life's for living now! Stuff what's next.
Life can easily become all about the here and now, with no thought about what's next. But what is next? What's happening when the party's over? Is there another one? Where are we going when this life ends? It's said that the average body has enough phosphorus to make 800,000 match heads, enough sugar to go into 60 cubes, enough salt to fill 20 spoons, and enough iron to make about five quid's worth of nails. The rest is just dust and water.
When we pamper and protect the part of us that's on the surface and immediate, and neglect the fact that there's much more to us than skin and muscles, it's no wonder that God calls us 'fools'! No one can guarantee when they will die, only that they definitely will. So take note, and take care of your whole being, because it's all intertwined - soul and body - and if you're part of God's family, it's destined for something much bigger and better than just this life.
What now? The Bible has plenty to say about eternity. Rifle through these passages if you want a bird's eye view on the here-and-now: Psalm 23, John 5:24, 10:27-28, 11: 25-26 and 1 John 5:11-12.
