Fight Night
'[God] wrestled ... with him until...' Genesis 32:24
Every week on the TV show 'Harry Hill's TV Burp', Harry will comically decide which two people or things from a particular scene are 'best' - such as babies or cats, chicken or turkey, Mars or meat. Harry Hill asks: 'But which is better?
There's only one way to find out - fight!', at which point two actors representing the two things appear from either side and wrestle to encouragement from Harry and laughter from the audience.
But what about the fight in Genesis 32? This wrestling match went on all night; if tickets had been sold the stadium would have been packed. Television crews would have broadcast it to the world; it would go down in history as the fight of all time, Jacob versus Almighty God.
Struggling with life, Jacob got rid of all distractions and left himself alone to fight it out with God, determined not to give in until God answered, until God blessed him. A few lessons for us from the big 'Fight Night'.
1) God turned up: God gives us permission to confront him with our issues. No problem is too difficult for God. So be real, be honest;
2) God wrestled: He'll never leave us struggling alone;
3) God blessed: Jacob was changed. Never bury your head in the sand. Confronting tough stuff with God always brings out the best outcome.
