Expectation
'All eyes are on you, expectant...' Psalms 145:15
Nicknames are commonplace across the world. Sometimes, at a young age, we get given nicknames by friends or family - do you have any? Perhaps there are some you find so embarrassing you prefer to keep them secret; others you choose to wear loud and proud and they've become your identity.
Some nicknames tell us what to expect from an individual; for example, if you were told about three people nicknamed 'motormouth', 'brains' and 'beanpole' - well, you get the picture. Our names are a unique part of us.
Did you know that God is known by many different names? Names in biblical times were of great importance, saying something about a person's character. The different names God has been given tell us a lot about who God is too. They let us in on what to expect from God.
Spend a little time getting to know God better through His names:
El Shaddai - Lord God Almighty (Genesis 17:1, Psalm 91:1); El Elyon - The Most High God (Genesis 14:17-20, Isaiah 14:13-14); Adonai - Lord, Master (Malachi 1:6); Jehovah Nissi - The Lord My Banner (Exodus 17:15); Jehovah Raah - The Lord My Shepherd (Psalm 23:1); Jehovah Rapha - The Lord That Heals (Exodus 15:26); Jehovah Shammah - The Lord Is There (Ezekiel 48:35);
Jehovah Tsidkenu - The Lord Our Righteousness (Jeremiah 23:6); Jehovah Mekoddishkem - The Lord Who Sanctifies You (Exodus 31:13); El Olam - The Everlasting God (Isaiah 40:28-31); Jehovah Jireh - The Lord Will Provide (Genesis 22:13-14); Jehovah Shalom - The Lord Is Peace (Judges 6:24).
