Esau and Jacob (2)

'Isaac ... loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob' Genesis 25:28

Rebekah favours Jacob and schemes to steal her eldest son's birthright from her husband. It all makes Eastenders look like Walt Disney. She sends Jacob into his dad's tent armed with a bowl of his latest Jamie Oliver recipe and a full-on Esau disguise (there is probably at least one chest wig involved). Old, nearly-senile Isaac, who should've gone to Specsavers, falls for the whole shebang.

Cue the original Gallagher-brothers domestic. From this moment on, the warring brothers become estranged from each other. Jacob begins a lifetime on the run, fearful that big bro will kick every lungful of conniving, ankle-grabbing, birthright-stealing breath out of him.

Could it be that Isaac's blatant favouritism for an all-action, sporty man's man has left Jacob with deep psychological scars?

Perhaps Jacob is left uncomfortable in his own skin and running away from home is as much about him running away from himself. Jacob's pivotal moment comes on the run, face to face with an angel who asks, 'Who are you?'

By now, Jacob is done pretending - he knows he'll never be Esau. The struggling, broken young man answers, 'I'm Jacob'. In other words he becomes comfortable in his own skin. Today's sermon: Stop pretending to be what you're not and start loving yourself for who you are.
