'Watch your words and hold your tongue; you'll save yourself a lot of grief' Proverbs 21:23
It has been said, 'he who thinks by the inch and talks by the yard deserves to be kicked by the foot.' Many of us end up in messy situations because we never learn to rein in our tongue.
'By our speech' says James 3:6, 'we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it.'
In order to know what to say, when to say it, and who to say it to, try to be guided by these wise words from the book of Proverbs: 1) Kind words heal and help; cutting words wound and maim' (15:4). Water and words are both easy to pour and impossible to recover, so use your words for the good of all.
2) 'Listening to gossip is like eating cheap candy; do you really want junk like that in your belly?' (18:8). Resist the temptation, don't indulge, and walk away from gossip.
3) 'The words of a fool start fights; do him a favour and gag him' (18:6). Don't stand by and let others make a fool of themselves. Use your words to help.
4) 'Watch your words and hold your tongue; you'll save yourself a lot of grief.' Be careful who you confide in. Not everyone is trustworthy. You can't stop people from shooting at you, but you don't have to give them ammunition. Be sure your brain is in gear before engaging your mouth.
