Dinner Time!

'But they all ... began to make excuses...' Luke 14:18

In Luke 14, Jesus tells the parable of a man giving a great banquet. The banquet represents the gospel, and the man hosting the banquet represents God. Jesus says that many were invited, but when the time came and everything was all prepped, those who had been invited made excuses to not come. 'The first said, I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me' (v.18).

Sounds pretty feeble, doesn't it? If you'd just bought a fat load of land, you'd think that you'd at least have a potter around it before buying it! When it came to it, the bloke preferred to revel in his wealth than do anything else. This was no greasy pub lunch he was turning his nose up at. This was food that could satisfy like no other, served by the Host with the Most.

It's easy to laugh at this bloke who couldn't see the worth of what he was giving up. But what about us? Even when we have seen the worth of Jesus, accepted our invitation for salvation, and know what it's like to hang out with God, we frequently still make excuses for not giving Him our time as often as we should.

Philippians 4:19 says 'And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.' God wants our time, but too often, we give Him our excuses.
