Bless You, Bless Me
'The Lord has blessed me for your sake' Genesis 30:27
Jacob: 'Let me go back home. Give me my wives and children for whom I've served you. You know how hard I've worked for you' (Gen. 30:36 TM).
Laban had to think fast. He knew how things had flourished ever since Jacob had arrived. A few starved animals had turned to fields of grazing cattle under Jacob's care. Sheep were producing knitwear, cows were manufacturing milkshake and the goats' cheese never tasted so good.
What with all the free home-help supplied by Jake's over expanding family tree, Laban would be a fool to let Jacob up and off for home now. So that very same day Jacob's father-in-law plots and schemes to keep his good thing going. He might be a schemer but the old fella knows which way his bread is buttered: 'If you please, I have learned from divine inquiry that God has blessed me because of you' (Gen. 30:37 TM).
In other words, if you want to get God's best for your life stick like Velcro to someone or something He's blessing. Proverbs 13:20 puts it like this, 'Become wise by walking with the wise' (TM).
And if you really, really want God's good stuff, take the reins yourself and do for them what you want done for you, 'The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed; those who help others are helped' (Prov. 11:25 TM). Learn to recognise what and where God blesses and throw your best into the mix.
