'I will walk at liberty and at ease...' Psalm 119:45
Maths! What a brain-boiler! You think you're just getting the hang of trigonometry, when along comes Pythagoras wearing a smug grin. Sometimes life seems like a never-ending maths textbook: you solve one problem when along comes a newer, meatier one. Only life won't allow you a sneaky look at the answers at the back of the book; unless of course the textbook is the Bible.
Jesus said, 'These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world' (John 16:33 NKJ). The world promises trouble, but Jesus promises peace: 'Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.' (Matt. 11:29 TM).
How did Jesus manage to keep His cool during the stresses and strains of His hectic life? Crowds draining Him, opposition accusing Him, disciples thirsty for Him; and not once did Jesus pull a sicky. How? Well Jesus lived as much in solitude as He did in the limelight: 'Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed' (Mark 1:35 NIV).
Spending alone time with God is your essential prescription against stress. Spend double the time with God you'd normally spend stressing and you'll learn to live lightly. That's the kind of maths that does you good.
