A DATE WITH DELILAH

'She prodded him day after day until he was tired to death' Judges 16:16

The mean warrior lay his head on her lap. His wild mane of black and biblical hair sprawled out before her. She pinched fingers and rubbed gentle circles into his temples. He took in a slow, steady lungful of air. This was better. The screams of dying soldiers were being silenced. The guilt of sleeping around with loose women was fading away. And even Delilah's unbroken nagging had ceased.

Living in the fast lane had left Samson running on empty. Life was too loud for quiet times. Temptation was far more attractive than plain old-fashioned Nazarite values. One Sabbath skipped from the synagogue had turned into one long habit. But who needed God when you could lash the bawling fur from a bear? Or rip the honey from a cone of bees? Samson would always be the beast of the Bible wouldn't he? And as Delilah fastened the bolt on the front door, a tired and emotional Samson drops his guard.

Maybe the old girl will cut me a break if I just tell her my secret. And then we can get down to some real fun, he thinks. With passionate hands Delilah begins snipping away at God's relationship with the warrior.

What now? Samson warns us that running low on spiritual input is a recipe for disaster. Make a list, mentally or on paper, of how you spend your spare time. Is there anything you can shelve from your week in order to spend more time refuelling with God?
