BUT JEHOSHAPHAT SAID, “IS THERE NOT YET A PROPHET OF THE LORD HERE THAT WE MAY INQUIRE OF HIM?” THE KING OF ISRAEL SAID TO JEHOSHAPHAT, “THERE IS YET ONE MAN BY WHOM WE MAY INQUIRE OF THE LORD, BUT I HATE HIM, FOR HE NEVER PROPHESIES GOOD CONCERNING ME BUT ALWAYS EVIL. HE IS MICAIAH, SON OF IMLA.” BUT JEHOSHAPHAT SAID, “LET NOT THE KING SAY SO.”
2 Chronicles 18:6-7 (NASB)
As I was reading the story of Jehoshaphat foolishly being allied to Ahab the King of Israel the part played by Micaiah the prophet of God impressed me. Here was a man, a former student of Elijah, who stood strong against King Ahab and his entire court despite the pressure placed upon him to conform to the majority point of view. He had history with Ahab, hence Ahab’s hatred of him, but under pressure from his esteemed guest Ahab has no option but to summon Micaiah. The king’s messenger goes for Micaiah, telling him plainly that he must agree with all the King’s “yes men” prophets. I love Micaiah’s response: “As the LORD lives, what my God says, that I will speak “ (2 Chronicles 18:13).
Micaiah is escorted into the royal presence, with all eyes on him; the whole royal court was there, but Micaiah did not bend. He spoke what God gave him, resulting in him being imprisoned. Eventually the Word of God is vindicated when Ahab falls in battle. The integrity and faithfulness of Micaiah to God’s guidance is a lesson to us all today in the 21st Century. We can read stories of Christians being persecuted for their faithfulness to God’s Word in many parts of the world, often with great brutality. In the West there are increasing cases of Christians losing their jobs, freedom and even being physically attacked because they dare to stand against the evil of this world. These stories we hear today are of many believers following the ways of Micaiah.
Dear Reader, are you following the brave example of Micaiah? You may never suffer the assault and imprisonment of Micaiah, but you may come under heavy pressure to conform to the loose morals of this world. The humanists and pagans of this age may try to silence your truthful words of witness; but that silence comes at a cost. May we all stand firm for the truth of God’s Word, knowing that Godly faithfulness is always rewarded.
