Proverbs 1:20-27 BSB (Berean Standard Bible)
20Wisdom calls out in the street,
she lifts her voice in the square;
21in the main concourse she cries aloud,
at the city gates she makes her speech:
22“How long, O simple ones, will you love your simple ways?
How long will scoffers delight in their scorn
and fools hate knowledge?
23If you had repented at my rebuke,
then surely I would have poured out my spirit on you;
I would have made my words known to you.
24Because you refused my call,
and no one took my outstretched hand,
25because you neglected all my counsel,
and wanted none of my correction,
26in turn I will mock your calamity;
I will sneer when terror strikes you,
27when your dread comes like a storm,
and your destruction like a whirlwind,
when distress and anguish overwhelm you.
The Self-Indulgent
Who are the “simple ones” being spoken of here? They are the immature, childish, selfish, self-indulgent, foolish, immoral, vile, corrupt, dishonest, crooked, malicious, deceptive, manipulative, and untrustworthy fakers who tell lies and who fake their Christianity while they live in disobedience to God and to his commands in sinful habits. They know God’s commands, but they ride over them, and so they continue to increase in their sinful ways rather than to repent and to obey God and to live for Jesus in righteous living.
They are also those who scoff at the righteous who are living for the Lord and who are teaching the truths of the Scriptures to the people. For they reject the gospel message taught by Jesus and by His New Testament apostles in favor of a “friendlier” and “less offensive” gospel message which gives them room to keep on in their sinful addiction while still claiming Jesus as their Lord and heaven as their eternal home. They want the easy way which leads to death rather than the hard road which leads to life eternal.
The Fall Into Disgrace
They are those who reject the idea that they must repent (turn from their sins) and follow Jesus in obedience to His commands in order to have salvation from sin and eternal life with God. They think if they say, “I’m sorry,” that it somehow erases their sins, even though they continue in their sins. But they refuse God’s call to repentance and to obedience to His commands, and they scorn His counsel, some of which comes through His messengers, because they refuse to receive the correction that they need.
Sometimes God, in His justice, and perhaps also in His mercy, allows the rebellious who profess His name, and who do not respect His correction, to suffer the consequences of their sinful acts during this lifetime. He will allow them to fall into disgrace and to lose the good favor of the people who admire them and who think well of them. And He may allow them to suffer the consequences of their bad judgments and their rebellion and refusal to submit to God’s law and to follow Him in sincere obedience to His ways.

28Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;
they will earnestly seek me, but will not find me.
29For they hated knowledge
and chose not to fear the LORD.
30They accepted none of my counsel;
they despised all my reproof.
31So they will eat the fruit of their own way,
and be filled with their own devices.
32For the waywardness of the simple will slay them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them.
33But whoever listens to me will dwell in safety,
secure from the fear of evil.”
Without Genuine Repentance
This reminds me of that passage of Scripture about Esau who sold his birthright to his twin brother Jacob for a single bowl of red stew because he was hungry. So Esau despised his birthright (Genesis 25). And then…
“14Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. 15See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God, and that no root of bitterness springs up to cause trouble and defile many. 16See to it that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his birthright. 17For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected. He could find no ground for repentance, though he sought the blessing with tears.” (Hebrews 12:14-17).
So, the story of Esau is being used here to illustrate what it will be like for those who fall short of the grace of God, because their minds and hearts are set on the flesh, and what the flesh desires, and not on God and on what God requires. And sexual immorality is what is being focused on here as well as is bitterness. And bitterness can be what leads to sexual immorality, because those who are bitter of heart may use and abuse others to their advantage as a means of revenge for whoever they are bitter against.
So, please know here that it is not enough to give lip service to the Lord while you continue in deliberate and habitual sin against God. Without holiness, you will not see the Lord. You will fall short of the grace of God because your flesh and what it craves is of more value to you than your spiritual inheritance. If sexual immorality is what you practice, you are without genuine repentance. For not everyone who professes Jesus as Lord will have eternal life with God, but only those who are doing the will of God.

Your bond is broken with your Lord and Savior
And your testimony is separate from Him.
Your words not matching your actions today.
Repent of your sin and bow down and pray.
Live what you testify in truth always.
Purity’s lacking in your life and witness,
For you profess one thing, but other you do.
Not moral, spiritual. Still of the flesh.
Not living in truth to what you confess.
Lying about it puts you in a mess.
Living a lie is your practice, ‘tis true of you.
Masquerade righteousness – none of it true.
Your heart is not given to your Lord God.
Because of how you live, you are a fraud.
Turn from your sin and give your life to God.
