Oh, that [men] would give thanks to the LORD [for] His goodness, And [for] His wonderful works to the children of men! Psalm 107:15 NKJV
Have you ever felt the job you’re doing doesn’t matter?
Here are some of the jobs assigned in Old Testament times: “Twenty-four thousand are to be in charge of the work of the temple…Four thousand are to be gatekeepers.” At times even the military commanders had to stop leading their troops to help choose workers “for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals” (1 Chronicles 23:4-5 and 25:1). Although these routines certainly had moments of meaning, there had to have been days when repairing building damage, scrubbing bowls, listening to complaining employees, and practicing musical instruments seemed patronizing and pointless.
In New Testament times, some invited popular leaders like Paul and Apollos to their homes (Acts 18:26), while others spent long months accompanying Paul to discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus (19:9-10). How did these individuals make such moments meaningful?
Perhaps they spent the unrewarded and unrecognized hours remembering the One who brought them out of darkness. Maybe they learned to spend less time comparing and more time giving “thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind” (Psalm 107:15).
Happiness comes in knowing you are working with Him.
Prayer: Lord, help me thank You for Your love and work so that I can see my routines as an important part of Your redemptive plan.
