But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. James 3:17
In today’s verse, the apostle James provides a filter for understanding whether the wisdom you follow is actually from God or not. Is the message pure? (Will it purify the heart?) Is it peace loving rather than contentious? Is it gentle at all times? Is it willing to yield to others? Is it full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds? Does it show favoritism, or is it sincere?
Compare the characteristics of wisdom that’s from above to earthly wisdom, which is at times helpful, but often tainted. Earthly wisdom says to look out for number one, to stand up for yourself, to get what you have coming. That’s not to say you shouldn’t stand up for yourself, but don’t do it because you’re motivated by pride or anger.
Jesus spoke only on the Father’s authority. He was in constant communication with Him. The two go hand in hand. God does offer us guidance sometimes without being prompted, but even then, it usually happens as a result of being in close relationship with Him.
