Wisdom [is] with aged men, And with length of days, understanding. "With Him [are] wisdom and strength, He has counsel and understanding. Job 12:12-13

Who do you listen to when you need advice? Is it someone who doesn’t have a fully formed picture of life? Or is it someone who’s spent time in life’s trenches and has lived to gain understanding? There’s a reason you might seek the advice of your father, women or other mature men and women. Their life experience may help you learn what to avoid and what to pursue.

This idea is linked to finding a mentor or becoming a disciple. You’ll need to admit you don’t know everything in order to learn something. If it’s true that you’ll likely seek those older men and women with more life experience to draw from, then shouldn’t it be true that you become doggedly determined to follow the God who possesses complete wisdom, power, counsel, and understanding?

God wants you to pay attention and make choices as to whose voice you allow into your thinking. If you’re careful who you listen to among your sphere of friendships, shouldn’t the voice of God and the wisdom He’s given in His Word take first place as your source of counsel for today’s tough choices? And tomorrow’s?

“Come near to God and he will come near to you” (James 4:8)
