You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry, and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless. Exodus 22:22-24 ESV
There are four groups God continually mentions as being close to His heart: widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. These groups were most likely to be disenfranchised—denied their basic human rights—because people tend to prioritize those with power over everyone else. But justice isn’t justice when it only applies to those with power.
In today’s scripture verses, we learn of God’s compassion and care for widows and orphans. We learn of His desire for justice through His promise to make more widows and orphans from those who mistreat disenfranchised folks.
Since our hearts are naturally drawn to care for our own families, God’s message is one of enlightened self-interest. It is in the interest of our own families for us to help those who have no husbands or parents. In doing so, our hearts will more closely resemble God’s who has adopted us into His family and treated us with love, forgiveness, and kindness.
Today, speak up for those whose voices have been silenced by society. Doing so ensures that our own voices won’t be silenced prematurely.
