Who Needs A Gang? - June 02, 2007
Studies reveal that most gang members come from broken homes.
States Ramone, "My father was gone...doing time in jail, and my mother was a drug addict. Most days I got my self off for school because she was passed out on the couch from the night before."
Dino replies, "My mother had me when she was only sixteen years old. By time I was ten years old, she had been married three times. The last guy she married was abusive, so I took off as soon as I could."
Jane agrees, "I knew who my real father was, but I guess he never wanted to spend any time with me. My mother did the best she could as a single parent, but I spent many nights alone because mom had to work two jobs just to make ends meet."
It is believed that gang members join gangs to feel a sense of unity and belonging, and because they realize there is strength in numbers. Such members have expressed they did not feel this sense of "family" within the home, so they subconsciously sought it out elsewhere.
How good it would be if all children, especially those from broken homes, could know and find comfort in the words of the Bible which reveal the very special position those who believe in God have. A person may not have an earthly father who is present in their life, but as children of God, we have a heavenly Father!
"Behold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and such we are. For this cause the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not." -I John 3:1
How wonderful it would also be if such young people tempted to seek a sense of belonging and identity within the negatives of gang life, could feel strength from knowing they are "heirs of God" and "fellow heirs with Christ," which basically means, we, as Believers, have the best daddy and family of all!
"The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him." -Romans 8:16-17
My dear friend, why seek goodness amongst evil? God, your loving Father is eager and willing to embrace you in to His arms and feed you with His living word.
