The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar as he entered. "Who is this?" they asked. Matthew 21:10 NLT

As Jesus entered Jerusalem, riding on a donkey, fulfilling prophecies about the long-awaited Messiah, the Jewish religious authorities and the common folks alike asked the same question: “Who is this?”

The religious authorities asked because they saw Jesus as a threat to their dominance. If Jesus was truly the Messiah, all their authority—the respect they commanded and the lives of relative ease they enjoyed under Roman rule—would be cast aside when Israel’s true King led His people. They were afraid.

The common folk heard rumors of Jesus and hoped He would overthrow the Roman authorities so they could be free from oppression. They were hopeful.

Jesus often inspires a mixture of fear and hope in people. He is the Messiah who came to rule men’s hearts. His kingdom is not found on earth but in His subjects.

Who is this? This is Jesus. The real question is how we react when He comes to claim His rightful place as King of our lives. Are we afraid of losing our power like the religious authorities? Or are we hopeful that we’ll finally be free from the oppression of this world?

Prayer: Jesus, take Your throne in my heart and in my life. Fill me with hope, and take away my fear. Teach me who You are by helping me love like you.
