"These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. John 14:25 ESV

It’s easy to imagine Jesus teaching for scores of hours during the course of His public ministry. It’s a bit tougher figuring out how the disciples remembered what He had said. That’s why it’s so good to remember what Jesus says immediately after today’s key verse.

In John 14:26, Jesus says, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” In other words, the Holy Spirit directly inspired what they remembered, taught, preached, and wrote in the four Gospels. This includes their many quotations from the Old Testament, of course.

In John 15:26-27, Jesus goes on to say, “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning.” In other words, the Holy Spirit directly inspired the apostles’ words and deeds.

Of course, it’s one thing for a writer to say he feels inspired. That’s “a lightning bug.” It’s quite another thing for the Holy Spirit to divinely inspire a biblical author. That’s “lightning”!

Prayer: Lord, speak to me through Your divinely inspired Word, the Bible.
