As Zechariah learned about the miraculous birth of his son John, the angel also communicated an essential part of John's mission: turning the hearts of the fathers to their children. Throughout the stories of scripture, we see time and time again that the works of God must be passed from one generation to another.

The faithfulness of God had to be celebrated and remembered, and families played a critical part in hosting meals, showing hospitality to neighbors, and instructing their children in the ways of God. The people of Israel set up monuments as ways to help future generations remember what God had done.

In light of the prophecies about John the Baptist's future ministry, it's no mistake that changing the hearts of fathers is central. Perhaps fathers are concerned about their own status in the community, their earnings at work, or their own personal pursuits.

Today there are more than enough distractions to keep fathers busy. When God wants to change the course of history, one piece of the puzzle will be the fathers who commit to guiding their children.
