"For our fathers have trespassed and done evil in the eyes of the LORD our God; they have forsaken Him, have turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the LORD, and turned [their] backs [on Him]. 2 Chronicles 29:6 NKJV

The worst had happened to the people of Judah. They had departed from the Lord and followed their own way, and they reaped the consequences of their choices as chaos and desolation enveloped them. Although it was surely common to revere their elders and to uphold the best memories of their ancestors, the only path for the people to start over was an honest assessment of the past. They couldn’t overlook their sins and failures. It was time to come to terms with where things had gone wrong and how they could forge a new path.

If you’re confronting your failures today, or the failures of your family’s past, now is a good time to face the truth honestly. Don’t try to hide the past or even the ways you’ve failed today. God already knows anyway! Even if you have to say hard things about your ancestors or your older family members, an honest assessment of your sins and history is essential for starting over.

Prayer: Lord, help me to see my failures for what they are so that I can freely confess them and receive Your forgiveness.
