When this perishable body puts on imperishability

When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: "Death has been swallowed up in victory." (1 Corinthians 15:54 NRSV)

Most of us have been to a funeral. You know when someone dies, the people at the funeral are usually very sad, and to show that they are sad, they wear very dark-color clothing. Most people at a funeral wear black or dark blue clothes to show that someone has died. In other countries, people wear different colors to indicate that someone has died. In China and Japan, people wear white to funerals. The Egyptian people wear yellow when someone has died. Many South African people wear red to symbolize death. In Iran, the people at a funeral wear sky blue, because they think that the dead person's spirit will go up into the sky. These are just a few of the colors that represent death around the world.

I think funerals should be more of a celebration for Christians. After all, we are celebrating someone's life who is now in the presence of God. As horrible as Jesus death was, we celebrate it because he died for our sins. And the Bible tells us that after three days, Jesus rose up to new life in God's heavenly kingdom. What a great hope we have through Jesus Christ, and what a celebration!

God of peace, help me to be at peace with those who die in Christ, so that I can celebrate life. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Amen! God is good and going home to Him is a real time of celebrating in the spirit, and yet there is still the sorrow of the temporary parting.
