When Strongholds become Entrenched

References:--2 Timothy 2:4
No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier

Once your consideration of a temptation has triggered an emotional response leading to a Plan B choice, you will act upon that choice and own that behavior. You may resent your actions or claim that you are not responsible for what you do. But you are responsible for your actions at this stage because you failed to take a tempting thought captive when it first appeared at the threshold of your mind.

People who study human behavior tell us that if you continue to repeat an act for six weeks, you will form a habit. And if you exercise that habit long enough, a stronghold will be established. Once a stronghold of thought and response is entrenched in your mind, choosing to act contrary to that pattern is extremely difficult.

Like environmental stimulation, a stronghold of the mind can be the result of a brief encounter or a prevailing atmosphere. For example, a woman goes into a deep depression every time she hears a siren sound. It turns out that she was raped 20 years earlier while a siren was wailing in the distance. In the weeks and months after the rape, the sound of a siren triggered traumatic memories. Instead of resolving that conflict, she relived the tragedy in her mind, deepening the emotional scars and locking herself into a thought pattern she cannot seem to break. That's a stronghold.

Other strongholds are the result of a prevailing pattern of thinking and responding. Imagine, for instance, a nine-year-old boy whose father is an alcoholic. When the father comes home drunk and belligerent every night, the boy is simply scared stiff of him. He scurries out of sight and hides. As the boy continues in his defensive reaction to his hostile alcoholic father, he forms a pattern of behavior. Ten years later, when he faces any kind of hostile behavior, how do you think he will respond? He will run away. His deeply ingrained pattern of thinking and responding has formed a stronghold in his mind.

Prayer:

Father, don't allow the enemy to deceive me into weak-willed actions that dilute my testimony and effectiveness as a believer.

I now understand what strongholds are. Many suffer from a strongholds, they just wish they knew how to get over it.
Peace sister.

God, through Jesus, gave us the "keys to the kingdom", not only to establish early church discipline, but also for us to be able to call upon the authority of both heaven and earth for the tearing down of strongholds in our lives and the lives of others.

For more in depth information, study and guidance on the subject of tearing down or shattering our strongholds I personally recommend Liberty Savard's books or Carlotta Waldman's course and scriptural prayers. Or if you are earnestly seeking help with strongholds and a guided bible study and intercessory prayer group, you may contact me directly through talk jesus about joining my strongholds study group.

great post.

Wow.. I thank the Lord for He is mindful of me...

I really still have a lot to work out. We all have a set of strongholds but let us have a more positive habit, daily quiet time with the Lord. It makes all the difference.

Let us practice the presence of the Lord. Pray, pray and pray, and be filled with the Spirit. :D

"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." Gal. 5:25 :thumbs_up

I like Dr. Anderson's article except for the title. It seems to me that the two words strong and hold indicate that the word stronghold refers to something that is firmly established or entrenched. In other words, it's not a stronghold if it is not yet entrenched.

Thank you Rizen1 for that lovely post...

This reminds me of my story. My mum used to have ulcers of the stomach and high blood pressure and as a result, sometimes she had to be rushed in hospital from home, thus, i was used to sirens around me. Years back my mum passed on to be with the Lord, her death still is a great pain to me.
So whenever i hear the sirens, i would remember how she suffered and the pain she went through....that would discourage me completely and loose concentration on what i was doing. I asked God to help me overcome this stronghold and as day goes by i feel almost comfortable when i hear the sound, but it hasnt been easy for me, especially to remember the lose of such a strong pillar in our family.....God is giving me strength day by day.

AMEN to all that!

It is so important to flee from sin and from temptation of the devil. If we hang around to have a look, we're already caught! Thank you for this post it is so relevant and so important to understand. Let's get saturated in Jesus. He is the only habit that we should have!

Jesus I pray that you can help me to surrender to you and your will and not to be distracted at all by the things of this world. I thank you that a life with you is sufficient for everything we need and I pray you keep me safe from the devil attacks. Help me to focus on you alone. Amen

Hope you all have a wonderful spirit led day :-)

I have a suggestion for you, ByHisGrace, that I think will help to break that stronghold off of you: start praying for healing for all the people involved in whatever situation the emergency vehicle is responding to whenever you hear or see such a vehicle running with lights and siren on.

I've been doing that for years and, while I don't have a stronghold issue like you do, it does get me away from thinking about myself, into doing something positive for others, and feeling good as a result.

Thank you Spirit led for being thoughtful about me, i believe that will work and it makes more sense....The bible says in Gal.6 That God is not mocked for whatsoever a man soweth he repeath, If i saw the seed of prayer for healing and comfort to others then i'll receive the same. God bless.
