When my kids were small, anytime we took a drive in the car that lasted over 20 minutes or so.. inevitably they asked "Are we there yet"?
I've always thought that when we died, we immediately went to Heaven, now I'm not so sure. I don't have the answer, but I have some scripture and some questions.
1Cor 15:12 Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?
1Cor 15:13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised;
1Cor 15:15 Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised.
1Cor 15:16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised;
1Cor 15:20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep.
Asleep in this context, usually means "those who are dead".
Eph 5:14 For this reason it says, "Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you."
1Thes 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
I love the Chris Tomlin song... "And I will rise, when he calls my name".
This particular incident is recorded in at least 3 of the Gospels,
Matt 22:23 On that day some Sadducees (who say there is no resurrection) came to Jesus and questioned Him,
Matt 22:28 "In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had married her."
Matt 22:30 "For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
Matt 22:31 "But regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God:
Also see Mark 12:18-23 and Luke 20:27-36
I get the feeling here, that the resurrection is a "one time" event, not an on-going event that happens every time a believer dies.
Luke 14:14 and you will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
John 5:29 and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
We see here that both the good and the evil will be resurrected at some point.
John 11:24 Martha *said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day."
John 11:25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies,
Again, "the last day" seems to indicate this is a one time event.
Acts 24:15 having a hope in God, which these men cherish themselves, that there shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.
2Tim 2:18 men who have gone astray from the truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and they upset the faith of some.
Heb 6:2 of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment.
Matt 27:51 And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split.
Matt 27:52 The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;
Matt 27:53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many.
Matt 27:54 Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!"
I've always wondered what happened to these "zombies". Did they stay alive and die a natural death later? Did they go back into their graves? Were they resurrected then and there? There is a similar story in Ezekiel 37 where Ezekiel brings the bones of an army back to life. (I'm not sure if this was an actual event, a vision or dream, or some meta-spiritual lesson).
1Thes 4:13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as do the rest who have no hope.
1Thes 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.
1Thes 4:15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.
1Thes 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
1Thes 4:17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.
So when the rapture happens (this is usually taken as the "last day" or "the Lords day") all of the Christian believers will be raptured up to the clouds with Jesus, not only the living Christians, but the dead Christians in the ground as well. In fact those who are already dead go first.
Jesus told the thief on the cross "Today..."
Luke 23:42 And he was saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!"
Luke 23:43 And He said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise."
Did he go to Heaven right away, or was Paradise a different place from Heaven?
We also see in the story of Lazarus and the Rich man, both the Rich man and Lazarus went to their respective destinations seemingly right at the time of death.
Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds.
Finally in a seemingly different event (a non-believers rapture of sorts) the non-believers are taken up to Heaven to be judged as well.
So... I guess the question is... when do we go to Heaven?
P.S.
I am also told there is a "suspended animation" type theory, maybe we will lie in the ground for hundreds of years, but when we "wake up", it will seem like we just died a few seconds ago.
