"[Is there] not a time of hard service for man on earth? [Are not] his days also like the days of a hired man? Like a servant who earnestly desires the shade, And like a hired man who eagerly looks for his wages, So I have been allotted months of futility, And wearisome nights have been appointed to me. Job 7:1-3 NKJV
Job was ready to give up, and he had every reason to feel that way. He had lost his livelihood, his servants, his children, and even his health. When his friends visited him, they only added to his wounds, leveling accusations against him and failing to bring any measure of comfort or consolation. What could Job do with so much stacked against him?
Perhaps Job’s next step isn’t quite obvious at first pass, but he correctly spoke the truth about his situation. He didn’t try to dress things up or put a brave face on unbearable suffering.
Whatever you may be suffering now or in the future, you won’t find God in delusions or tidy theological statements that aim to put a Band-Aid on a serious wound. You can tell God the truth about your disappointments, your longings, and even the perceived inequities of your life. Deliverance will come only when you first face your loss and oppression with honesty.
Prayer: Help me, Lord, to be honest in my prayers about suffering and loss so that I can experience Your help.
