"O LORD, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am! Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah Psalm 39:4-5 ESV

God’s understanding and experience with time, as previously mentioned, are not like ours. Our lives are fleeting, but that doesn’t mean we are insignificant or that our actions have no permanent consequences.

It is precisely because of our brief lives that we must be especially careful to spend our time well. When we use it to build spiritual foundations of Christ in others, time will reveal them to stand against all afflictions. When we use our time toward selfish ends, our accomplishments will not last any longer than straw in a fire (see 1 Corinthians 3:10-15).

To have a lasting impact on this world, we should busy ourselves with those things God deems most important, the things Jesus cared for during His ministry. James 1:27 says, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”

When we care for the poor, the forgotten, the voiceless, we store up treasures that will last far beyond the span of our years.

Prayer: Lord, give me perspective so I use my time on things that matter.
