What is conscience? In my opinion it is knowing morally right from wrong. Do you agree? :lightning :ip: :lightbulb

Dear Brother in Jesus, Greetings!

I notice you are a CyberPaster - something new to me!

What intrigues me is why a Cyberpaster of your ilk (re your profile) asks this question.

Anyway, this is my contribution.

Every man is born with a conscience. It is a gift of God to mankind. However, man can quench his conscience by continually ignoring its voice over a period of time. The result is that his heart becomes hardened and seared so that it no longer speaks to him. How does this happen? Little by little! It happens with people ignoring the voice of their consciences over little things, then bigger things, until eventually nothing evil bothers them at all.

Webster's New World Dictionary defines the conscience as: "a knowledge or sense of right and wrong, with a compulsion to do right; moral judgement that opposes the violation of a previously recognized ethical principle and that leads to feelings of guilt."

God provided a conscience even in unregenerate men to point them toward His principles and ways. All of us, before we are saved and regenerated by the Holy Spirit would be totally depraved if it were not for this provision of God by His grace. However, the longer people live in sin and carnality, the less the true inward conscience has any authority in their lives. Most of the time, particularly in today's culture, we have developed "false" consciences. These are "programs" in our minds which de-sensitise the concience, not our spirits, as to what is right and wrong, and these things (evolution, secularism, humanism, situational ethics, active homosexuality, abortion, adultery, free sex, drug taking, traditions and doctrines of religious thinking, just to mention a few) control what we think is moral and ethical. The world's thinking overrides and drowns out the inner voice of the true conscience that God put within us.

Hebrews 10:22 tells us, "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works."

Because of the world's ungodly influences, it is very important for a Christian to allow His conscience to be "healed," or renewed, to reflect God's standards which we find in the Bible. That is why Christians cannot be guided by their consciences in most cases. It is much safer to be guided by the Word of God and by witnesses and guidance from the Holy Spirit.

Today we are shocked by the evil acts of men who perform ghastly deeds and show no remorse whatsoever. We ask, "How can they do such things?" When the conscience is seared -- burned out by constantly going against its nudgings -- then men become like animals in their behavior. The Bible speaks of this in the following verses.

1 Timothy 4:1-2: "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron."

This also happened in ancient times, according to Paul's letter to the church at Rome (Romans 1). After a certain period of time, God will give someone with a seared or evil conscience "over to a reprobate mind." That means the mind cannot be renewed, because the person has for so long chosen self-ways (which really are Satan's ways) over God's that it is not possible for them to change. This should be a warning for all who persist in sin.

Romans 1:28-32: "And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them."

When we give our lives to the Lord, He begins a work in our hearts and minds and brings healing and enlightenment to the conscience. When a Christian's conscience is renewed, it will not condemn them. When a Christian's mind is renewed, it will not think carnal, self-centered thoughts. When a Christian's emotions are renewed, they will no longer be negative. When a Christian's will is renewed and submitted to God, he will no longer choose against God's ways.

This happens on the positive just the way it does on the negative side. Our little choices to obey God and live by His Word day by day will eventually bring the changes in our lives that will cause us to be more like our Lord. While on the other side, those choices to ignore the conscience and go ahead and disobey God will bring about a hardened and unrepentant heart. We are warned against allowing this to happen.

Hebrews 3:13-17: "But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?"

Yours in Jesus,
David.

Hello David!

First of all thank you for your reply.
Yes, I am a cybernet pastor. Some poeple have set my ministry over mortar and brick churches and I resent that because it causes strife. After all the harvest is ripe and laborers are few. Yes? I wish not to discuss too much here on it, but I would by email discuss my ministry further. Ask Chad if this is ok first if you decide to do so.
Some have used severely a hot iron on their consience and have developed a reprobate. nondiscerning mind into kaos, but by The Holy Spirit some by salvation of Jesus Christ can restore their conscience which was once lost.

The reason I find conscious still active is for the following reason:
Romans 9
1I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,

2That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.

3For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:

It seems the more I reject my sinful nature the more witness my conscience proclaims of the Holy Spirit in my body, The Temple GOD resides as in all believers in Jesus Christ. Make sense?

So why did I use this? If I can set a pattern or establish
that conscience is a center for absolute right and wrong, then I have an opening of asking unsaved people if they ever lied, cheat, or stolen which most if not all have confessed one time at least in their life. Neat huh? Then I would challenge such a person what right do they have to go to a flawless Heaven and be approved by a perfect, flawless GOD Almighty.
You as a believer many years ago I have asked Jesus to forgive my sins, but it was not until this year that I asked Jesus to turn from my sinful nature that produces my sins. What a difference. I have found many believers who are saved that have a problem saying in their hope that they know they are saved and loved by GOD. I can say now that I know GOD loves me and I know I am going to Heaven. Just today I met a man who look confident as a Christian but when I asked him if he was going to a perfect Heaven, he said he hoped so withot confidence or even faith. I asked him if he turned from his sinful nature. He told me he had not. I offered him to tell GOD in prayer to turn away from his sinful nature. He refused, rolled up the window and said while rolling up the window, "Talk to you later." I probably will never see him again. I hope you see my motive for bringing up, What Is Conscience? Does this make sense David? :ip:

So now, what do you think is conscience ?

Yes, conscience is defined as inborn ability within humanity to discern between right from wrong, wether regenerate or not according to Romans 2:15

The scripture speaks of weak consciences, good consciences, pure consciences...but also says:
Tit 1:15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

I dont see anything in the scripture about "restoring a conscience which was once lost"...Jesus said you must be "born again"...not restored.

I have asked Jesus to forgive my sins, but it was not until this year that I asked Jesus to turn from my sinful nature that produces my sins.

You asked Jesus to turn you from your sinful nature? I have to ask, is it really possible to be set free from your sinful nature while still living in a body of flesh? And if so, will you explain to me what exactly Paul saying in this passage:

Rom 7:21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Hi Coconut!
Canada? Wow!
My grandparents were Canadian.
Well, what I am saying here is that I wish to turn away from my sinful nature. He still a part of my body, but I am not his slave anymore. When testing comes using this old sinful nature I have a choice. Of course new testing comes from this old sinful nature for GOD allows it to see how strong I am will wise in relying on Jesus Christ rather than my old nature and testifies if I rely on Jesus to escape and pass the tests GOD gives me by way of The Holy Spirit. This is what "set apart in action" by living stones should represent in our churches. Just tell GOD that you wish to turn away from your sinful nature. GOD will do it!!!!
I think the verse in Romans is about salvation, how one escapes their wretchedness as an unsaved sinner. And that is the beginning of the holiness walk! To achieve the desired inner man, it is Jesus or nothing!!!

Isnt turning away from sin the very definition of repentance?
Does God repent for us? I simply dont see how "God turns us away from our sinful nature" has scriptural basis.
I could be somewhat confused about what you are trying to say...or I could be confusing (nobody testify now lol)

What is Paul saying here? Whos doing the 'turning' so to speak?

"Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus." Phi 3:12

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Phi 3:13

Knowledge is not an entity. Knowledge is accumulated information. Our conscience is the spiritual entity through which God attempts to guide our thinking in matters involving moral decisions.

Allowing your sinful nature to be a part of you as a believer is a sin in itself though it is still in your present moral, corruptible body. That is why we have to all die and rise incorruptible!
No GOD does not repents for us. He, GOD THe Spirit Coaches us and convicts us, but we must by will desire to change. Now read carefully the following: When we asked Christ to forgive our sins that included our sinful nature in that we having eternal life guaranteed, but now once that was Lord and ruler of our life along with satan our former father with our destiny The Lake Of Fire is now used as a tester used by the Lord of your new life in Jesus GOD ALMIGHTY. So in this sense we as believers have not reached perfection. Oh no! More testing! :ip:

1 Corinthians 8:6-8 (King James Version)
King James Version (KJV)

6But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

7Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.

8But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.

As you can see in this passage concience can be in proper form of knowledge of verse 6 or improper knowledge in verses 7 and 8 above thereby making itself the knowledge of the evil one satan which is kaos and vanity thereby weakening what it was suppose to be, doing the guidance of GOD ALMIGHTY as Jesus did. That's why need Jesus every day for our battles so we do not fall into the prey of darkness living :lightning for we are children of GOD! :ip: :boy_hug: :girl_hug: :shade:

Where you see conscience in the New Testament KJV it is translated from the greek word suneidesis, which means moral awareness or conscienceness.
1Timothy 4
1*Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2*speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3*forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

Man's awareness of right and wrong came about in the garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the tree of Knowledge Of Good And Evil. But this is just knowledge of what right and wrong, not the ability to do what is right. When we become born-again we are to be led by the Holy Spirit not our own consciences. Jesus said that He( the Holy Spirit) will lead us into all Truth.

I agree with you friend The Holy Spirit is in charge, but according to the above passage the consience is giving testimony that The Holy Spirit is allowing the consience the allowance of witness who is in the believer in Jesus: THE HOLY SPIRIT or THE HOLY GHOST.

But this [conscience] is just knowledge of what right and wrong, not the ability to do what is right.
I agree and even more so I believe The Holy Spirit sharpens the knowledge in the consience to see even things of The Spirit including morals. The ability to do right is to yield and do which is the will of only the believer from the will of Jesus to do what is right given the right to do so by the blood of Jesus and thus GOD ALMIGHTY permits this freedom.

I think I'm having some difficulty understanding your statement here.

Grace enables us to do the will of God.

Allowing your sinful nature to be a part of you as a believer is a sin? You cant drop your sinful nature, or be turned away from it, you are stuck with it as long as you remain in your human body. You can however "put on Christ" and walk in the Spirit so as not to fulfill the lusts of the flesh (Rom 13:14) The flesh will always be there to war agianst the Spirit. This really has nothing to do with conscience, your conscience can dictate to you what is right or wrong, but will it ultimately keep you from following your sinful nature? Obviously the answer is no.

Paul said: This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Gal 5:16

None of us have died and been raised incorruptable yet...so what you are saying makes no sence to me.

Um...I read it carefully. Isnt it true that in no sense have we as believers reached perfection?
I also dont see where eternal life is guaranteed , thats a osas teaching thats a product of mans wishful thinking, not a scriptural one.

jiggyfly said "When we become born-again we are to be led by the Holy Spirit not our own consciences. Jesus said the He( the Holy Spirit) will lead us into all Truth."

That agrees with what Jesus says here: "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. John 3:6

Oh man I have seen victories no matter what a person is in! Divorces, beatings, sufferings of all kinds. This even though we cannot experience all the same thing in problems have the same center that wants to down us with Satan's help, our sinful nature. Hey now professiols to assiat in divorces, battered men and women with children. Spiritual suffering while making other transitions need not be. Focussing on that horrible old man and telling GOD that one wishes to turn away from that sinful nature is such grace and the like minded attitude and desire GOD wishes to give to all believers. Listen I talked to a sister in Jesus the other day. I asked how her day was going. She said
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi there, things are so so here.Pray for me!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I then told her
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let me send encouragement: I have been encouraged when a test comes I go to GOD whatever it is and say Lord, I wish to turn from this sinful nature and I get victory every time of course to get the whole counsel of this is to tell The Lord that one wishes to turn away from one's sinful nature. The sinful nature is the source where our sins are produce. We can with GOD's help grab the bull by the horns! I hope this will be encouraging to your so, so situation. PTL!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Know what she said next?
Huh? huh?
Ready?
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lane, Thank you for your words today!!!!And thank you for being a great example for me to look up to!
Peace

Hey you want to witness a depressed cannot forgive himself believer transformed?
Hmmm?
Stand by!
Here we go!
quote:

I repented of a period of sinning; then a year later sinned in the same area for a time, and had to repent again. Each time it involved tears. Trouble is...I still haven't forgiven myself...

This really happened!!!
My reply:

"Just tell GOD in Jesus' name that you wish to turn from this sinful nature that is condemning you and HE will! OK?"

Ready to see the results? PTL!!!!!

Thanks, Pastor Lane. I had a bit of trouble with self-condemnation for a while there; but the Lord has let me know that I've been given me a clean slate. We tend to underestimate the sheer power and extent of his Love and Forgiveness...

WOW!!!! Praise The Lord!!! Look at what Jesus did!!!!
I did not stop there!
I asked this question:

WOW!!!
I know I have ruffled some feathers. Shake them sinful nature of resentment feathers now and watch what GOD does to you! I tell you yopu don't just hope, but you know that you know GOD loves you and you know you are going to Heaven in your hopes!!!
My last correspondence to this brother :

Proverbs 14:12
* There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

This is what happens when a conscience becomes the center for absolute Truth. >>>Death.

John 14:6&7
6*Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 7*If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

24/7, do you have scripture to support your theology of eternal security?

I didnt find much there to get excited about 24/7...you are shouting "GO GOD" while at the same time contradicting His Word...you are right, you really shouldnt store that in the barn, you should toss it out back of the barn in the manure pile (sorry to have to be so graphic, but maybe that got your attention, since scripture doesnt seem to)

What does Paul have to say?

Gal 3:3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?

I don't find a need to establish the conscience as the center for our understanding of right and wrong. I just simply ask a man if he's ever lied. Ever looked at a woman with lust, or felt hate for anyone. Ever taken a company pen or paper clip? Then I confront him with the ten commandments, and what Jesus said. He answers yes to all by the way. So I tell him that he just said he is a murdering, thieving, adultering, liar at heart, and now he can see why he is in need of forgiveness. I then show him how his own works are as filthy rags to the complete Holiness of God and that he needs help in being made white as snow. The help is the work of Christ on the cross, and it is already done. All he has to do is accept it.

No need to even bring up "conscience" in this conversation.

God bless,
Nigh

Thank you for your comments!I love your avatars!!! :ip:
Lets see someone asked from scriptures that salvation is guaranteed.

14If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

15If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

16Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
The answer is yes!

All he has to do is accept it.
By entreatment, yes Nigh and do it, die daily. Not for salvation but for some soul still in the POW camp heading for The Lake Of Fire. You know I here the same excuse over and over and over again. We are not perfect. We are going to sin again. I hope I'm save. Oh I hope I am going to um Heaven. Either you know or you don't! Listen friends such an attitude is like doing liturgical church services in vanity or nothingness. Its just being "realistic." And we say we are more than conquers in Jesus? LOL! Sure you are. No wonder no revival! You do not have to sin! With all due rsspect get your heads out of the sand. We have battles to do! :ip:

Ah yes! The hurling insult. My what constructive criticism you have! Oh well rewards are graet in Heaven they tell me.:lightning

I think Coconut and jiggyfly hit the nail on the head here. I agree on this. The Holy Spirit guides us, not our conscience alone. I'd rather be led by the Holy Spirit than the mind and/or conscience. I do think that the Holy Spirit guides our *conscience* but not our conscience alone guiding us. I hope I said that right :)

Amen. Read Ephesians 6:10-18 [Armour of GOD]

It doesn't mention about putting on 'conscienceness' or be led by it. It talks about the Living Word of GOD, prayer and supplication and meditating on the Word of GOD. Repenting.

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.

16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints

Matthew Henry's Commentary

The apostle's concern that his countrymen were strangers to the gospel.

Being about to discuss the rejection of the Jews and the calling of the Gentiles, and to show that the whole agrees with the sovereign electing love of God, the apostle expresses strongly his affection for his people. He solemnly appeals to Christ; and his conscience, enlightened and directed by the Holy Spirit, bore witness to his sincerity.

He would submit to be treated as to accursed, to be disgraced, crucified; and even for a time be in the deepest horror and distress; if he could rescue his nation from the destruction about to come upon them for their obstinate unbelief. To be insensible to the eternal condition of our fellow-creatures, is contrary both to the love required by the law, and the mercy of the gospel. They had long been professed worshippers of Jehovah.

The law, and the national covenant which was grounded thereon, belonged to them. The temple worship was typical of salvation by the Messiah, and the means of communion with God. All the promises concerning Christ and his salvation were given to them. He is not only over all, as Mediator, but he is God blessed for ever. (Ro 9:6-13)

I have a question 24/7. Your profile testimony says this in the very last line...

"i know now GOD loves me and I am going to Heaven in my hopes. I call this progressive grace."

Can you kindly show me anything in Scripture that mentions any "progressive grace"?
