Brimstone in the Bible: Symbol of Divine Judgment

In biblical language, brimstone is an archaic term for sulfur, a yellow, pungent mineral that burns with a blue flame. It’s often paired with fire to depict scenes of divine wrath, purification, or destruction.

️ Biblical Significance

  • Genesis 19:24 – The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is the most iconic example: “Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire...”
  • Psalm 11:6 – Brimstone is part of the “portion” of the wicked, symbolizing judgment.
  • Isaiah 34:9 – Prophetic imagery turns land into burning pitch and brimstone, showing total devastation.
  • Revelation 21:8 – The “lake that burns with fire and brimstone” is described as the second death, a final judgment for the unrighteous.

Literal vs. Symbolic

  • Literal: Sulfur was known in the ancient world for its flammability and use in purification rituals.
  • Symbolic: Brimstone evokes God’s holiness confronting sin, often in apocalyptic or prophetic contexts.

Cultural Echoes

The phrase “fire and brimstone” became shorthand for fiery sermons warning of hell and divine punishment. It’s deeply embedded in Western religious rhetoric, especially in revivalist preaching.

If you've ever smelled burning sulfur you know how pugent it is.
