"But don't begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you. Luke 14:28-29 NLT
Throughout the Gospels, people had to choose between their attachments to work, comfort, or an inheritance or the opportunity to follow Jesus. The choice you face today may appear different from that of Jesus disciples, who lived in a very different time—when many were farmers, fishermen, or laborers. Yet you face the same challenge: to count the cost of following Jesus and discerning what you’re attached to when considering the cost of following Him.
Rather than jumping in to follow Jesus with energy and enthusiasm that will wane over time, Jesus urges you to count the cost with sober patience. Consider that devoting your life to God’s purposes will require you to make sacrifices, to measure success in different ways from others, and to miss out on the pleasure and ease that others enjoy. Yet there is a promise of life and peace with Jesus if you’re willing to count the cost and follow Him wholeheartedly.
Prayer: Jesus, help me to see what gets in the way of following You so that my heart can remain fully committed to You and Your way.
