Luke 6:36-38 (NKJV)

Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned.

Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together,

and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use,
it will be measured back to you.

How do you interpret the red line above?

All will be judged

I will try to quickly answer your question. No man is without sin and no man has not judged others. Therefore, all men will and must be judged so that God will produce "many sons & daughters". The Elect are judged by Christ now (judgment begins at the house of God) and all others are judged after they are resurrected from the grave at the second resurrection.

Judgment is a necessary part of salvation. Without judgment we (mankind) cannot learn righteousness. And unless we become righteous, we cannot be born again into a son or daughter of God.

John 10:10 says that Christ came to give us (mankind) life and to give us more abundant life. Christ gave us all (mankind) life from what He accomplished at the cross. He satisfied the penalty of sin for all of mankind (the penalty of death). Through judgment (and other gifts He gives us), we will have life more abundantly (life without ever sinning again).

Once we are without sin, there is no need for judgment. But until we are without sin in our lives, judgment is necessary.

I hope this helps,
Joe

I think it means not to judge others unless you are actually living up to the standards you are judging. It is not right to judge others when we are not any better ourselves.

One verse takes many

Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned.

How do I interpret this one verse? Within its context. Please allow me to explain and expound upon it.

12And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. 13And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles; 14Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, 15Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes, 16And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.

We begin the context with the night before as Jesus spent the whole night praying to God his Father. An important decision was made the following morning as he chose his apostles.

17And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; 18And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed. 19And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

We see exactly whom he is going to address with these words. His words were prefaced with signs and wonders of healing and casting out devils.

20And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. 21Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. 22Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. 23Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. 24But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. 25Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. 26Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

He speaks of two different types of people. Those who follow truth and those who live in error. It can clearly be seen that they who are after the flesh are the ones who persecute those after the spirit.

27But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 28Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. 29And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. 30Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. 31And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. 32For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. 33And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. 34And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. 36Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

He turns his attention solely to those who will follow him. Explaining to them what it means to do the works of God the Father.

37Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: 38Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

He pulls it all together for a summary statement contrasting the two, that which is of the spirit versus that which is of the flesh.

39And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? 40The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. 41And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 42Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. 43For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 44For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. 45A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

As his disciples, they would need to learn how to teach effectively. He explains that they cannot teach if they do not know how or if they do not possess understanding.

46And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 47Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 49But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

To end his teaching of the disciples and the multitude, he explains the very fact that in order for them to benefit from his teaching, they must do as they say. There actions must match their profession of faith in him.

The whole theme of the passage is about judgment and condemnation. As he spoke about 'they that hate you', 'separate you from their company', 'reproach you,'cast out your name as evil'. These contrasted against deeds of mercy to the undeserving, 'Love your enemies', 'do good to them which hate you', 'Bless them that curse you', 'pray for them which despitefully use you'. 'unto him that smiteth thee offer also the other', 'taketh away thy cloke take thy coat also', 'Give to every man that asketh of thee', 'him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again'.

So our verse we are concerning ourselves about:

Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned.

It summarizes that those who do not judge or condemn in the way that they interact with people, through their deeds, will not receive judgment or condemnation by God the Father. Those who repay evil with evil will be judged as evildoers. Those who by patient continuance in well doing, actually keeping the sayings of Jesus by doing them, will escape judgment and condemnation.

Light has come into the world and they who loved the light come to the light that it may be made manifest that their deeds are wrought in God.

I happen to use the handle " judge not " but only because I liked the ideology behind it.
Could Jesus be saying since we are incapable of seeing a person's heart or mind or knowing his or her personal relationship with God, we are not to take the place of God in making judgments about someone's eternal salvation.
But Jesus says we will know a tree by its fruits-while we can't see hearts we can see and judge actions.
We must be able to discern between good and evil in the actions of others and avoid them in order to grow in spiritual wisdom.

But what then of the saying 'out of the over abundance of the mouth the heart speaketh'? People show what is in their hearts every time they open their mouths don't they?

1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
Why would we judge anyone who is or will be made alive in Christ?Do we know who will be made alive?Who are we to judge one "made alive"?
James 2:12
So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

Judgement and accusation is from the Adam system.
Life is from the Christ system.
We are going to enforce one or the other.
We can't enforce life for ourselves only.

And by this you hope to prove what? Can you explain the complete context wherein this verse is found and why it says what it does? Please elaborate.

My Spirit man judges by spiritual truths.
My old carnal man looks at the situation and judges according to that which is true at that moment. If someone denies Christ my carnal judgement will consider them lost. But since that could change in the future it is not truth. The truth never changes, the truth is Jesus Christ.

This is an unchanging Spiritual truth:
1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

What I mean is why would I judge a person before they have been made alive.Once they are alive they are perfect so there is no need for judgement.Let the dead judge their dead.Anyway I always try to remember 1Cor.15:22 when I feel judgmental.
I believe Jesus's work was finished on the cross and I pray that the work manifest in my life and in the lives of those around me and in the lives of the ALL who shall be made alive. If I judge those I am enforcing the finished work in then I would cancel my own prayers. So when I judge another I am judging Gods ability to perform his word.

Romans 14:4 Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.

This scripture may help us all as well! John 12:47-50 We are to judge ourselves, believe me,to me that is sure enough to judge on!

Out trust should should be only in God not ourselves, or mankind.
We will be blessed if we keep our faith with God otherwise we can face curses and a loss of our blessings.
In Romans 8:7 -the Carnal mind is enmity against God " echos the heart is deceitful and wicked in in Jeremiah.
Overall failure to understand to put all our trust in God will ultimately lead to a destructive path as Judah learned.
The human mind needs spiritual healing -one thing we should pull out from this chapter 17(Jer) some people think that God can't know what we are thinking but He does and can deliver just recompense to everyone.

My Spirit man judges by spiritual truths.

What does this look like? Please illustrate that I may understand.

My old carnal man looks at the situation and judges according to that which is true at that moment. If someone denies Christ my carnal judgement will consider them lost. But since that could change in the future it is not truth. The truth never changes, the truth is Jesus Christ.

You say your carnal man sees what is true at the moment. He sees someone as lost. You say that he cannot see the possibility for repentance? You say that the carnal man sees truth and in the same breath that truth never changes but that this carnal man who sees truth is in error because he cant' see the future where said truth might change. It makes no sense to me.

This is an unchanging Spiritual truth:
1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

All shall be resurrected. The just and the unjust. Some to life the rest to eternal death.

What I mean is why would I judge a person before they have been made alive.Once they are alive they are perfect so there is no need for judgement.Let the dead judge their dead.Anyway I always try to remember 1Cor.15:22 when I feel judgmental.

Amen. Always good to remember the upcoming judgment when feeling judgmental.

Once again you lose me in your words. Paint a picture through illustration showing me what each part of what you said looks like and maybe I might understand what you are trying to impart unto me. I ask in all sincerity.

Romans 14:4 Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.

This scripture refers to judging one who is weak in the faith. For example, one doesn't understand that we can eat all things but only eats herbs. This one might have read Genesis 1:29 and think that it is only right to eat as was prescribed to that generation. This man we are not to judge for his error. God will make him stand as he is personally abiding by his conscience toward God through his word. The scripture in other places such as 1 Corinthians speaks to us that we need to judge them which are within and cast them out when they are wallowing in sin that God might judge them through Satan. As God judges them who are without it says.

There is a time to judge and a time to refrain from judging. The difficult thing for you and I to do is understand when to do what. Paul says in one breath "I judge not my own self", then in another "If we would judge ourselves we would not be judged". It is as Peter said that Paul writes some things that are hard to understand and there are those who twist his sayings to their own destruction. I pray God will lead us in how and when we judge or refrain from judging as it pleases him.

In Jesus Name,

Agreed. We should have no confidence in the flesh as we have the sentence of death within ourselves.

We will be blessed if we keep our faith with God otherwise we can face curses and a loss of our blessings.

Amen. Blessing comes to those who hear the word of God and obey it through faith.

In Romans 8:7 -the Carnal mind is enmity against God " echos the heart is deceitful and wicked in in Jeremiah.

There is truth in what you say but it is incomplete as we are given power to purify our hearts before God as James explains when he commands that we do it. To have an impure heart is to be double minded. We must be led in the spirit of our mind instead with a pure heart.

Overall failure to understand to put all our trust in God will ultimately lead to a destructive path as Judah learned.

Amen. There is a way that seems right to a man but leads to death. We must put all of our faith in what God has said, obeying his word through our spirit leading the body as the two are contrary one to the other.

The human mind needs spiritual healing -one thing we should pull out from this chapter 17(Jer) some people think that God can't know what we are thinking but He does and can deliver just recompense to everyone.

Agreed.

Thank you for your time and effort to expound upon your previous thoughts to aid my understanding of your position. May God bless you even further than what he has already bestowed upon you in understanding his truth,

Gary

Hi Gary

You say your carnal man sees what is true at the moment. He sees someone as lost. You say that he cannot see the possibility for repentance?
I said there was a possibility of future repentance whether he can see it or not.In some people it is easier to believe that they might repent in the future and there are some who seem very lost.At any rate the carnal mind weighs things one way and the spiritual mind weighs things differently.

You say that the carnal man sees truth and in the same breath that truth never changes but that this carnal man who sees truth is in error because he cant' see the future where said truth might change. It makes no sense to me.
No,the carnal mind sees what is true,it can't see the future but it can calculate possible paths.
I said Jesus is the truth. The truth does not change.

Example:
If I said I had a cold then that may be true.I don't always have a cold so it is only temporarily true.

The truth however is Jesus. So verses like "by his stripes we were healed" and "no weapon formed against me shall prosper" are non changing,non-negotiable truths that I would meditate on.
So the truth is that I don't have a cold.It might be true that I am being attacked by a cold but it's not mine so I don't have it.

The truth is eternal and is a constant.
The truth can never change.
Jesus said he was the truth.
