What does fearful mean in Rev 21:8

I believe its being fearful do to the reason that you dont believe. Or that you do believe are hiding your talent on the ground. These are my two suggestions, I hope some one can explain it better.

Revelation 21:8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
KJV Commentary
For the unrepentant, who are designated under some eight categories, there will not be bliss, but burning in the lake of fire, the second death (cf. 20:6, 14). A believer may be called on to pass through one death, i.e., physical death (and if the Rapture intervenes, he will forego that death, cf. I Cor 15:51, 52); an unbeliever faces two deaths: physical death and the second death. Why are the cowardly and liars spoken of in two categories? The first are afraid to accept Christ and bear the ridicule of the world. The second are those who have denied their sin and need of Christ as Saviour.

"Fearful" in that context refers to those whose lives are ruled by fear which, in turn, means they have no real faith. Keep in mind that faith is not the absence of fear; faith is having the courage to act in spite of fear.

My understanding is this: many people think that the opposite of love is hate. The definition of hate is: intense hostility and aversion usually due to fear, anger, a sense of injury, extreme dislike, to abhor, to loathe.
God is perfect. 2 Samuel 22:31 says that God's way is perfect, his word is flawless. Jesus said in Matthew 5 to 'be perfect as your heavenly father is perfect.'
How can God love and hate and be perfect unless hate is not the opposite of love? So what is the opposite of love? Reread the definition of hate: intense hostility and aversion usually due to FEAR.
The Bible says that God hates some things like pride, divorce, iniquity, wickedness, etc.
Does God require us to fear? I mean the real, scary fear, not the awe and respect we are to have for God.

I don't know if this helps you at all, but it opened my eyes to the fact that we are not to fear. And to be fearful is to not trust in God. Perfect love can cast out fear because through trial and error we can learn to be fully dependent upon God's provision in every situation. This isn't really something that a new Christian can experience, it comes with the maturing process we all go through. New Christians will experience it as they learn to trust in Jesus. I really needed to be reminded of this, so thanks for the question!

The fearful, unbelieving, the abominable, murderers, whoremongers, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars .. these are the people who are non believers and are not in Christ. Jesus Christ died and rose again and He will not die again (the second death). We, who are in Christ will also not face the second death. How could we since we are ONE in Christ ! AMEN!
Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

The word used in Revelation 21:8 is not so much being scared or fearful as in scared, but rather not being able to believe, a timid approach to faith, a being too scared to believe, rather than being scared of others, or of sharing the Gospel.
It's a fine line, but there is a big difference.
Revelation 21:5-8 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
The fearful and unbelieving.... could be rendered the faithless and disbelieving. Having little faith, or perhaps better put, being weak in faith is not being faithless, just as disbelieving means deliberately not believing, having full knowledge of what they are resisting, deciding not to, rather than not believing because we have not understood or heard.
