"You fathers--if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead? Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him." Luke 11:11-13 NLT
Jesus wants His followers to consider what they’re imagining when they pray to God. Imagining an angry God or an uncaring judge could undermine their faith. Jesus chose the mot compassionate and caring image possible: a father who cars for his children, listens to their requests, and provides what they need.
What do you imagine God is like when you pray? It’s possible that your past relationships or past experiences in prayer have clouded that image of God’s loving care for you. Jesus is asking you to take His words to heart when you pray and to trust that God can meet your needs even today.
Take note that Jesus mentioned the children were asking for a reasonable need, such as fish or an egg, and so the type of request can also matter when praying. Live by faith and trust that God is a good Father, but don’t lose touch with your “daily bread” needs.
Prayer: Thank You, Jesus, for revealing the love of the Father so that I can pray in confidence.
