WASHING AND CLEANSING
And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). How does JESUS save us from our sins?
We are saved from guilt when we are forgiven of sins by being baptized with water (washed away).
…..Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.' (Acts 22:16)
We are saved from condemnation by being under the grace of GOD for our faith.
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit (Romans 8:1).
No condemnation if we walk with the Spirit and not after the flesh.
But we are not saved from sin to be righteous until we have been purged of sin (unrighteousness).
All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death (1 John 5:17).
Sins/trespasses are our acts/deeds of unrighteousness, our transgressions.
Sin is our unrighteousness, our iniquity, our depravity, our corrupt fleshly ways.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us (justify us) our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
To forgive us to justify, to cleanse is to sanctify. GOD justifies (forgives) us and cleanses (purges/purifies) us until we have been cleansed of sin to be the righteousness of GOD in Christ.
GOD forgives us of our sins (trespasses/transgressions) as we confess them.
GOD cleanses (purges/purifies) us of our sinful ways (unrighteousness) when we confess our sins.
The next verses show these believers escaped (repented of/overcame) the corruption in the world (lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of life) and were cleansed (purged/purified) of their old sins.
.....given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust (2 Peter 1:4).
For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins (2 Peter 1:9).
He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels (Revelation 3:5).
These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)
1 John 2:15-17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (16) For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. (17) And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith. (1 John 5:4)
