alot of times i hear people claim this scripture as a promise of physical healing, but i disagree. his stripes were for a much greater healing!! look at isaiah ch 53:5 it clearly says he was wounded for our TRANSGRESSIONS. bruised for our iniquities. he bore the punishment we deserve. o.k before throwing stones look at the accounts of jesus healing in the new testament ex: the lady w/ the blood issue mat ch 9:22. ex: blind man bartemaeus mk ch 10:52 ex: the ten lepers Lk ch 17:19. the common theme is thy faith has made thee whole. nowhere in these accounts is it recorded that jesus took punishment for these people to be healed. it was their faith that he could. and also these accounts were prior to jesus being punished by the soldiers and crucified. in the book of james are new testament instructions for the sick and healing james ch 5:14-16. this is inclusive of physical healing and confession to the healing of a heavy conscious, in my opinion. without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins. thank god he healed us from the plague of a sin debt that we were unable to pay. praise god!!

Here is Peters explanation of it in 1 Peter 2. It looks much like what you have said.

24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. 25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

I have to admit, by far the greater infirmity is sin. Sicknesses and even physical death are secondary results. In the resurrection even the lost will have whole bodies, if only to suffer in them. Also in Revelations there are sinners who are not able to die though they wish for it. I believe as Creator he can do what he pleases; he has only bound himself to us by the words he has spoken. He has freely bound himself to the words he has spoken which will not perish. Other than that there is nothing he can not do. He clearly said however, that without the sheading of blood there is no remission of sin.

I agree with steve and Dice.

Actually, I'm real tired of hearing people pray, "I'm healed by His stripes", when praying for physical healing. I couldn't figure out why it bothered me so much, and you guys just explained it for me in the bible.

Does anyone else have some scriptures that could explain further?

Here is what I just found for you dreamer.

Question: "What does the Bible say about healing? Is there healing in the atonement?"

Answer: Isaiah 53:5, which is then quoted again in 1 Peter 2:24, is a key verse on healing that is often misunderstood and misapplied. “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). The word translated “healed” can mean either spiritual or physical healing. However, the contexts of Isaiah 53 and 1 Peter 2 make it clear that it is speaking of spiritual healing. 1 Peter 2:24 says, “He himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by His wounds you have been healed.” The verse is talking about sin and righteousness, not sickness and disease. Therefore, being “healed” is speaking of being forgiven and saved, not physically healed.

The Bible does not specifically link physical healing with spiritual healing. Often times people are physically healed when they place their faith in Christ – but this is not always the case. Sometimes it is God’s will to heal, sometimes it is not. The Apostle John gives us the proper perspective: “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of Him” (1 John 5:14-15). God still performs miracles. God still heals people. Sickness, disease, pain, and death are still realities in this world. Unless the Lord returns in the next 50 years or so, almost everyone who is alive today will die, and the vast majority of them (Christians included) will die as the result of a physical problem (disease, sickness, injury). It is not always God’s will to heal us physically.

Ultimately, our full physical healing awaits us in Heaven. In Heaven, there will be no more pain, sickness, disease, suffering, or death (Revelation chapter 21). We all need to be less preoccupied with our physical condition in this world, and be a little more preoccupied with our spiritual condition (Romans 12:1-2). Then, we can focus our hearts on heaven and when we will no longer have to deal with physical problems, Revelation 21:4, "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

Well, :omg: I never realized this before either. I always claimed the healing for others too.

Thank you for this thread

God bless you all  :girl_hug: :star:

I agree with LLJ. GOD does heal physically His believers according to His will. I do believe ultiamtely what Jesus did on Calvary was obviously for spiritual healing. Nonetheless, I believe it includes other factors as well including physical healing, blessings from GOD (as originally intended before the Fall) and communication with the Father in Heaven (I guess you can say this is linked with the spiritual healing as GOD is Spirit).

I am glad to find some Christians that agree with me on this matter. Most of the charismatic movements here in our country is just about name and claim by His stripes. I actually believe that our Father, can use these sicknesses to benefit our spiritual being. That is why I also wondered, did we not treat the physical handicap Christians wrongly. You never or seldom see them as pastors or in the ministering team, they normally answer the phone or do the admin. I often ask the question to other Christians, how will they react, if they come forward for prayer and here comes someone in a wheelchair to pray for them, most of their answers were negative. Most of the time we treat them as not so “bright”, we think they cannot be very spiritual because, why do the Lord not answer their prayer? The world doesn’t except a president in a wheelchair, but we live in the spiritual Kingdom of God. Are they not the same way healed spiritually by His stripes like us? Did the church not rob them from a normal spiritual growth? Is it not time that we embrace them with special love and treat them on an equal level. Maybe this only happens in our country.
Be blessed
Niel.

Amen! Oh, yes. It is wrong to look at christian brothers and sisters as not having enough faith to be healed physically. Our healings (both emotional and physical and spiritual) are between ourselves and the Lord.

We cannot and should not judge someone else by their appearance or by a physical challenge of any type.

Praise the Lord. His main issue with us as His children is spiritual. He came that we would receive salvation and eternal life! Yes, He does care about our physical needs here on earth. I think He deals with each individual--we don't have the right to say, "Oh, if he or she were strong in faith, he/she wouldn't be dying of cancer." What an awful judgement to put upon a brother or sister!

This world is full of sin, and both bad and good things happen to Christians. The rain falls on the worldly, and upon the righteous.

May God help us all to love one another and look to Him.
