Walk in a Worthy Manner

Staff Member
Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:1-3

The apostle Paul was a prisoner in Rome as he penned this epistle to the church in Ephesus. As such, he could have asked for any number of things—a visit, support, prayer—but, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he had something else on his mind.

He wanted Christians in this church to walk in a manner that was worthy of their calling, and then he spelled that out for them. For what distinguishes the Christian from the world any more than humility, gentleness, patience, tolerance, love, and unity? And what better way to show the world what a redeemed life looks like?

Gentleness, humility, and patience are often viewed as being consistent with certain personality types; nevertheless, Paul said they were basic callings for every Christian.

How are you doing in these areas? If you’ve fallen short in your calling, confess that to the Lord and then rely on the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit to change you.
