There the mandrakes give off their fragrance, and the finest fruits are at our door, new delights as well as old, which I have saved for you, my lover. Song of Solomon 7:13 NLT
Most men secretly long for a marriage like the one described in today’s reading. They long to experience the love of a wife who delights in offering “every delicacy, both new and old.” As yesterday’s entry explained, this won’t happen unless a man’s character becomes intoxicating.
Another way to develop tremendous character is to pray David’s prayer in Psalm 141:4: Do not incline my heart to any evil thing, To practice wicked works with men who work iniquity; And do not let me eat of their delicacies.
Paul echoed this idea from a positive perspective when he wrote, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”(1 Corinthians 15:58). When men remember that their “work of the Lord” requires daily sacrifices in their personal lives and marriages, they experience the intoxicating love God originally intended.
Your marriage can have an “every delicacy” quality when you resolve to obey God’s Word and ask Him to help you trade the “delicacies” of those who mock God for the “delicacies” of a wife who serves Him.
Prayer: Father, help me avoid malevolent men and their evil practices to that I can experience the delicacies of an intoxicating marriage.
