Behold, a king will reign in righteousness, And princes will rule with justice. A man will be as a hiding place from the wind, And a cover from the tempest, As rivers of water in a dry place, As the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. Isaiah 32:1-2 NKJV
The kind of leadership God wants His people to experience recognizes human needs. Isaiah’s prophecy about leaders who protect their followers from the “wind” and the “storm” and meet needs like “streams of water in the desert” can be realized now.
Paul reminded the church that although “we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does” (2 Corinthians 10:3). The management methods God endorses surpass and ultimately supplant the world’s. Throughout history, God has spoken against egotistical leaders who put themselves before their followers and said things like “Let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder” (Proverbs 1:12-13).
You can be the kind of leader who champions equity, who provides real and metaphorical shelter, protection, water, and shade for your employees or coworkers—the kind of leader who helps with housing and legal assistance, who intervenes for others like the “shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land.”
Prayer: Father, help me be the kind of leader You desire, a leader who meets needs.
