"The LORD [was ready] to save me; Therefore we will sing my songs with stringed instruments All the days of our life, in the house of the LORD." Isaiah 38:20 NKJV
In today’s passage, King Hezekiah’s enemies had gathered, his personal and professional affairs were a mess, and he was dying. No medicines or treatments, no counsel or consult, held any hope.
Hezekiah made the usual request men make at times like this: he asked God for help. But his preface to the request was unusual: “Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes” (Isaiah 38:8). How many other Old Testament kings could use such a strategy? Could you?
The next time you’re feeling like Hezekiah, remember that taking the time to study scripture and read devotions like these makes you more, not less, like him—like someone who has “done what is good” in God’s eyes.
And if God doesn’t fix your situation, remember what Jesus told Paul: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Sometimes God will answer the way He did for Hezekiah, sometimes the way He did for Paul. Either way, you can find strength in these words: “Whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm” (Proverbs 1:33). Keep reading and listening!
Prayer: Father, help me to experience the hope that comes from hearing You!
