For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. Psalm 62:1-2 ESV
Included in the classic film Raiders of the Lost Ark is a scene where Indiana Jones faces an accomplished swordfighter. The swordsman has obviously spent years honing his craft because he flourishes his blade with impressive skill. The script for the film originally called for Indy to have a long sword fight with this guy, but the filming process was running behind and the set was incredibly hot. Finally someone suggested Indy use the gun on his belt to take down the swordsman, and the iconic scene was born.
You may think you have great defenses built up around you. You may take comfort in your bank account. Maybe your house is an underground nuclear bunker. Or possibly you’ve spent your life learning martial arts. When it comes to God, your protective measures are as useful as a sword in a gunfight.
Learning to defend yourself isn’t a bad thing, but no one can defend himself from God’s will. Fortunately, He’s on your side. He is the fortress that cannot be shaken, and prayer is your key into His safety. God doesn’t promise you won’t face trouble, but no matter what troubles you face, your soul is safe with Him.
Prayer: God, may the safety of my soul give me peace beyond understanding.
