And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, "So, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." Matthew 26:40-41 ESV
Why share a story that features people who were shakable? Perhaps because every man who has ever lived has endured a personal shaking that left him unnerved, embarrassed and humbled. It’s good to know your experience is mirrored in the Bible. You may have a unique personality, but your life experience is probably not as unusual as you may think.
It’s important to understand that everyone starts this life journey shaken. For every story of a man being bold, there is a beginning defined by timidity. For every instance of unwavering determination to move forward, there is a story of indecision.
There is no condemnation here, just an encouraging voice inviting you to stand in the place of the unshaken, to leave indecision behind, to make the decision to follow—and then follow.
The disciples weren’t always unshaken. They just learned to follow the One who will stand firm forever. That’s a great example to follow.
Prayer: God, lead me away from this place of uncertainty. On my own, I am unnerved, embarrassed, and humbled. Lead me to the place where I begin to follow You, the Unshakable One. Help me remember that boldness comes from You.
