Unforgiveness: Spiritual Poison

Unforgiveness is the single most popular poison that the enemy uses against God's people, and it is one of the deadliest poisons a person can take spiritually. It causes everything from mental depression, to health problems such as cancer and arthritis. I'm not saying that in every single case of cancer, it is due to unforgiveness, but I am saying that it can cause cancer. Cancer comes from the devil, scientist can't explain it, doctors don't understand where it comes from; it's the symptoms of a curse. God allowed the Israelites to face diseases and sickness when they disobeyed Him (Deut 28:58-61), and when they would turn back to Him, He would heal their land and take sickness from their midst (Exodus 23:25, Deut 7:15). In the New Testament, Jesus gave us two commandments (Matthew 22:37-40), and if we break those, we can be opened up to curses, just as the people in the Old Testament were. Jesus never came to abolish the law (Matthew 5:17), but He did come to set us free from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13), meaning, Jesus paid the price so we can be set free from any curses we may have come under.

Two commandments given to us by God

Matthew 22:37-40, "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

Jesus gave us very important commandments to follow; one of them was to love one another, as He has loved us (John 15:12). Love is the exact opposite of unforgiveness, envy, jealousy, hate, pride and bitterness. You can't truly love somebody and hold bitterness or unforgiveness against him or her at the same time.

Our responsibility to forgive others

God sent His Son Jesus to die for our sins, so that we may be reconciled to Him, without spot or blemish. He asks that we give others the same forgiveness that paid for us. He tells a parable in Matthew 18:23-35 that says the same thing:

"Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took [him] by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses."

Unforgiveness shows we don't really love Jesus

In John 15:12, Jesus commands us to love one another, as He has loved us. True love doesn't hold bitterness or unforgiveness against that person. If we are bitter or hold unforgiveness against somebody, then we don't love them as Christ loved us. If we don't keep Jesus' commandments, then it proves we don't love Him.

John 14:24, "He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings..."

Unforgiveness prevents God from forgiving our sins

Matthew 6:15, "But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."

Unforgiveness opens us up to the tormentors (the devil)

Matthew 18:23-35, "Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.

Unforgiveness can block God from answering our prayers

Mark 11:24, 25, "Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought (something) against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses."

Matthew 7:7, 12, "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you... Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them..."

John 15:5, 10 tells us that if we abide in Christ, we will produce much spiritual fruit, and the way that we abide in Christ is by keeping His commandments. Verse 12 tells us that His commandment is to love one another as He has loved us. Verse 7 tells us that if we abide in Him (by keeping His commandments), and His Word in us, we can ask for anything and it will be given onto us! The reason a lot of people's prayers go unanswered, is because they aren't keeping the commandments that Jesus gave us; therefore they aren't abiding in Christ's love, and if we aren't abiding in Christ's love, how can we expect Him to hear our prayers?

Unforgiveness can defile a person

Hebrews 12:15, "...lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled."

Notice at the end it says, "many be defiled." This is a VERY common, if not one of the most common everyday things that defile people! Many bondages can be shed when a person forgives those who have wronged him or her.

Unforgiveness can give Satan an advantage

2 Corinthians 2:10-11, "To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices."

Unforgiveness can keep a person out of heaven

Matthew 7:12, 21, "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets... Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven."

1 John 3:14, "We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death."

Unforgiveness can prevent us from being fruitful spiritually

John 15:5 tells us that if we abide in Christ, we will produce much spiritual fruit, and the way that we abide in Christ is by keeping His commandments (verse 10). Verse 12 tells us that His commandment is that we love one another as He has loved us. Therefore, if we don't love one another, as He has loved us, then we do not abide in Him, and how are we suppose to produce much spiritual fruit if we don't abide in Him? According to verse 6, the branch that doesn't abide in the vine will be cast into the fire.

Unforgiveness can open us up to curses

When people in the Old Testament disobeyed God's commandments, it opened them up to curses (Deut 27:26). When people nowadays disobey God, it can do the same thing; it can open them up to curses. Curses can cause mental and emotional problems (Deut 28:28), physical problems (Deut 28:35, 60, 61), financial problems (Deut 28:17, 38, 43), divorce and unfaithful spouse (Deut 28:30, 56), emotional stress (Deut 28:34), childlessness (Lev 20:21), and that's not all, plus those curses can be handed down to your future generations (Exodus 20:5).

The blessings of forgiveness

When we forgive, it opens us up to God's forgiveness (Matthew 6:15), it puts us in a receiving position when we pray (Mark 11:24, 25), it helps us become spiritually fruitful (John 15:10, 12, 5), and we will know that we have passed from spiritual death to being reconciled with our heavenly Father when we love each other (1 John 3:14)! When we keep God's commandments and love one another, we prove that we love Jesus (John 14:21), and we abide in Christ's love (John 15:10)! What a magnificent blessing forgiveness really is!!!

Lack of forgiveness to others indeed is a poison. Scriptural examples show that if we are unwilling to forgive others, we ourselves shall not be forgiven. And indeed, it darkens our soul to the point that we also become the hypocrite that causes so many to turn away from God.

It is often claimed that unforgiveness can keep a person out of heaven and this simplistic interpretation does not do the topic justice or consider the light of other scriptures such as Matt 18:34-35. Someone may ask, if we are saved by faith alone and not works, and cleansed from all our sins by Christ's blood, how can one sin such as unforgiveness keep us out of heaven? And if unforgiveness can keep us out of heaven, then what about gossip, lying, swearing, aren't these just as bad as unforgiveness? And then we may form a conclusion that says we must be sin-free to enter heaven.

To highlight that kingdom of heaven is not the same as heaven itself (God's dwelling place), note that Jesus says the kingdom of heaven has come near, or was on Earth (Luke 10:9). The kingdom of heaven is where God's rule and reign happens on Earth, and can result in healing, deliverance etc etc.

Actually to shed more light on what really happens to those who don't forgive others, we can turn to Matt 18:34-35 :

34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

Unforgiveness means the Father will "torture until....".
This is not the same as "lake of fire for eternity", or "eternal hellfire". Hellfire is not for "until" but forever.
So a kind of "purgatory" can be clearly seen here.
But to not confuse it with the Catholic doctrine of purgatory which is something else, let's simply consider it to be some sort of unpleasurable experience, whether in the soul-state, or in the resurrected body state, I do not know. Maybe the jailers or torturers are the angels who will be giving people 100 lashes with a cane or rod. Maybe it is a literal jail where they are kept from enjoying Christ's rule on the Earth.

Now the difference between kingdom of God and Kingdom of Heaven. Clearly God is not the same as Heaven.

Being born again brings us into the kingdom of God (John 3:3, Mark 1:14 ). Kingdom of God has to do with the person of God.
Kingdom of God is what all saved , born again, regenerated believers enter into. In other words, we are brought into God, Christ, into the Holy Spirit. He lives in us and we live in Him.

But unforgiveness can keep us out of the kingdom of Heaven.
Kingdom of heaven is the rule and reign of Heaven on Earth.
Specifically it can refer to the 1000 year rule of Christ on Earth which is one big party and happy time for believers.

Those with unforgiveness cannot experience and enjoy the kingdom of heaven on the Earth today.

Believers are saved from hellfire, no matter what, even if we have unforgiveness (and we all do from time to time).
But believers with unforgiveness will be tortured and may not be able to participate in the kingdom of heaven, that is, Christ's rule and reign on the Earth for 1000 years.

Unless a person is a hypocrite (pretender), calling Jesus Lord will get you saved, no one can call Jesus Lord except by the Spirit (1 Cor 12:3).
But not doing God's will, will keep people out of the Kingdom of Heaven. They will be "tortured until.." and after that torture, will be accepted into the heavenly home.

Chastisement by God, Fathers, or men is not foreign to the bible, but many Christians overlook it, and only consider "heaven" or "hell". For example Jesus was chastised (or scourged):
Luke 23:22 "And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go. "

Chastisement of believers by the Father is for their own good, to make them holy:
Heb 12:9-12
"Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!"

Not doing the will of the Father is disobedience and lack of respect, therefore the appropriate punishment is a whipping or chastisement to teach respect and fear of the Lord.

But whether we believe such a sin will keep us out of heaven itself, or only keep us out of the kingdom of heaven (which itself is by no means a pleasant thing), makes no difference as long as we agree unforgiveness has bad consequences.

I disagree. You contradict the Word.

When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21 NLT)

How do you expect to enter Heaven unforgiven James? Explain that to me and everyone else here. Matthew clearly says if you do not forgive the Fathef will not forgive your sins. So how does one get into Heaven if he's not forgiven? Impossible.

Of course, the unforgiven cannot enter Heaven, so they are forgiven before they enter Heaven, through punishment as Matt 18:34-35 indicates. Presumably if unforgiveness is the offense, and this offense is paid for by" jailing and torture", then "paying back all owing" is to be eventually forgiven. This is likened to a Father who chastises their child for their disobedience, and after a while the Father's anger is satisfied, but they nevertheless remain their child. We must read Matthew 6 and Matt 18 together, both must complement each other on what happens to unforgiving believers. But, I have no issue believing God could send unforgiving believers to hell, in extreme cases it may be justified, after all He is judge not us, either way He expects His children not to harbor unforgiveness, but at least be willing to forgive.

The phrases 'kingdom of God' and 'kingdom of heaven' mean exactly the same.

Here have a look at the usage of both phrases by Jesus below.

Matthew 19
23 And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
24 Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

Further I remember reading some time ago that Matthew is the only Gospel that uses 'kingdom of heaven'.

Unbiblical. Kingdom of GOD = Heaven. Same thing.

You cannot enter Heaven if you have not forgiven everyone. This is plain and clear in the Scriptures.

While some believe that the Kingdom of God and Kingdom of Heaven are referring to different things, it is clear that both phrases are referring to the same thing. The phrase “kingdom of God” occurs 68 times in 10 different New Testament books, while “kingdom of heaven” occurs only 32 times, and only in the Gospel of Matthew. Based on Matthew’s exclusive use of the phrase and the Jewish nature of his Gospel, some interpreters have concluded that Matthew was writing concerning the millennial kingdom while the other New Testament authors were referring to the universal kingdom. However, a closer study of the use of the phrase reveals that this interpretation is in error.

For example, speaking to the rich young ruler, Christ uses “kingdom of heaven” and “kingdom of God” interchangeably. “Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven’” (Matthew 19:23). In the very next verse, Christ proclaims, “Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God” (verse 24). Jesus makes no distinction between the two terms but seems to consider them synonymous.

Mark and Luke used “kingdom of God” where Matthew used “kingdom of heaven” frequently in parallel accounts of the same parable CompareMatthew 11:11-12withLuke 7:28;Matthew 13:11withMark 4:11andLuke 8:10;Matthew 13:24withMark 4:26;Matthew 13:31withMark 4:30andLuke 13:18;Matthew 13:33withLuke 13:20;Matthew 18:3withMark 10:14andLuke 18:16; andMatthew 22:2withLuke 13:29. In each instance, Matthew used the phrase “kingdom of heaven” while Mark and/or Luke used “kingdom of God.” Clearly, the two phrases refer to the same thing.

How do we interpret the teaching of Matt 18:34-35 which indicates that some are given the opportunity to pay their debts.
Although Matt 6:15 indicates the Father will not forgive those who don't forgive others, it does not say how long the Father's unforgiveness will last. Plain and simple reading of Matt 18:34-35 indicates that God will eventually forgive those who don't forgive others, if they have "paid their debts".
I think if Jesus meant to say that unforgiveness led to eternity in lake of fire, He would not have said "jail/torture until...."
Although I have read interpretations that say "until" means eternity.

Col 1:13 says we are now in the kingdom of God, but obviously we are not yet in Heaven. Therefore kingdom of God does not equal Heaven. The kingdom of God includes Heaven, but Heaven is God's dwelling place in the spiritual realm. There is also a dwelling place of God on the Earth.

The meaning of "unforgiveness" according to Matt 18 also implies unjust action, revenge, towards the offender. That is, I may have unforgiveness towards someone who said something bad to me, but suppose I then take revenge, burn their house down, it is not right, so I deserve to be punished. In the end God will judge fairly on a case by case basis.

Born _again alone is eternal life. Not forgiven sinning in any way does not keep us from the free gift once we have it. Our New Spirit cannot sin. So we can not lose salvation.
But when we sin here and do not repent . We bring suffering on our own flesh. And maybe others in our lives?

It very bad not to forgive. My ex had a problem with not forgiving Her Dad for raping and abuse HER. She could not forgive HIM. But ASK the LORD to replace that hate in HER. And He did. Before that she had fits of anger ,After she no longer had them.

Listen there is no one on earth who does not sin at times. Some in there minds and other times in there flesh ?
Some never know they have sinned in there minds and wonder why they are sick? Now not all sickness comes from sins we did.

Salvation a FREE GIFT. WE DO NOT live sinless lives to keep it or get it. It truly is the Gift of GOD ! He already died for every sin we will ever do. And NO flesh goes to NEW JERUSALEM ever.

No person here on this site or any where on Earth can live 100% prefect lives. We just try hard to serve our LORD as prefect as we can,Because We LOVE Him and want to please Him always and know it hurts Him when we do evil .

We really mess up when we think we are more than others or over coming all things in our flesh minds and body. It causes pride which GOD hates.

Rom_7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

Rom_8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
Because the carnal thinking does not need GOD or Truth or LOVE or righteousness which comes from JESUS.

1Ti_1:15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.
Paul has far for given over to our LORD JESUS than any of us. He knew the truth very well . But yet failed at times as we all do.

But the LORD there too help us ,all we do is tell HIM we are not able and we need HIM. Nothing He will not do too help us if we only trust in Him and not ourselves or doubt.

1Jn_2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

1Jn_1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Rev_1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

Never think your sins are to much for Him or your so unworthy. He makes us worthy, it true in our selves we are Nothing. But in Him we have eternal life. Which is a never ending relationship.

It has a spiritual beginning and a Never ending. We Love because He puts the LOVE in us. Love gives mercy.

This is just the way I know it to be. No one need agree ?

They could mean the same but not necessarily always. God's kingdom can be on the Earth, or in heaven, spiritual or physical, inside of us, or outside of us. It could refer to God's kingdom in the present, the past, or the future yet to come. To always interpret "kingdom of God" or "kingdom of Heaven" as "the place you go where you die" is not always correct, it depends on the context. Likewise, not to be allowed entry into the "kingdom of God" does not necessarily mean "to lake of fire for eternity", if "kingdom of God" does not mean "Heaven", and from passages such as Col 1:13, which say we are in the kingdom of God now, obviously, we are not yet in Heaven.
