"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit." - Proverbs 18:21
When I was younger, I used to make faces...funny faces, scary faces, like every other kid. I remember my mom saying "If you keep on doing that, your face is going to stick like that!" I had that initial fear of forever being cross-eyed, but I kept on doing it. Surely it would go back to normal...just like Stretch Armstrong! And of course, it never stuck.
Now that I'm growing in Christ, Jesus is teaching me something different. There is something that does stick if we continue doing it. Something that is not pretty, just like an ugly face. I'm talking about having a negative attitude. We all have our days...our pity parties. We're human, it's expected. But I'm talking about a constant, everyday habit of expecting the worst. Maybe we immediatley assume the worst about a person we meet. Maybe we assume that someone we know will never change. Whatever it may be, at some point, we say that something will never change. We need to be careful about what we speak in our everyday lives. Our words have power...they affect many things. You don't just say the first thing that comes to our minds when we are having a conversation. What we're thinking may not be appropriate, or may hurt someone's feelings. Try applying this when you're thinking about a trial, or issue in your life. Instead of saying, "This will never stop" or "I'll always be this way", speak goodness into this situation. Speak proseperous things. Claim the blessing of a change in the situation! No matter how small, no matter how big. And be patient with getting in the habit of doing this. It takes time and effort to be constantly positive, but with the help of the Holy Spirit, anything is possible...for those who believe.
"May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer." - Psalm 19:14
