If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. John 8:36

Every year, the state of Vermont holds Town Meeting Day in some forty towns on the first Tuesday of every March. This holiday is also the anniversary of Vermont’s admission to the Union in 1791, but it’s better known as gatherings where direct democracy is freely practiced. This is because all citizens of a town can discuss and vote on community issues, and any issue is open to debate. They discuss the town business, elect local officials, approve the coming year’s budget, and debate other issues.

This is the most basic example of democracy, where neighbors gather to discuss pressing matters that affect their local community, as well as the state and nation. You may take such liberties for granted, but the fact is, many people in the world don’t enjoy such things.

Even if you don’t live in Vermont, take some time today to ponder this nation’s unique Christian heritage, history, and unrivaled freedoms. It’s a good time also to be thankful for the freedom you enjoy in Christ, and to determine to guard it. Avoid slipping back into slavery to sin or into the bondage of legalism.

Remember, you live by the love and grace of God! Paul wrote, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage” (Galatians 5:1 NKJV).
