In my study of the history of Israel in the "Old Covenant" I came upon 1 Chronicles 13:9-12.

1 Chronicles 13:9 and when they came unto the threshingfloor of Chidon, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled. 13:10 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzza, and he smote him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God. 13:11 And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzza: wherefore that place is called Perezuzza to this day. 13:12 And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me?

A study of the entire Chapter 13, tells the whole story. My point today is to glean from this incident adequate warning for all of us as we handle Holy things of God. More precisely, does this incident with Uzza cast a shadow of a reverential fear and caution as we handle the Word of God....In what ways?

  • I feel sure we would all agree to "fear" Gods word, I mean fear as in respect or reverence!
  • You analogy using Uzza, would be no different than any Old Testament warning by God. Any common man who past through the veil into the Holy of Hollies was forbidden and would be no different than God's rule about the holiness of the Ark and not to touch it. I read something once about old temple protocol. In it the High priest, of course, was the only human to go behind the veil, and be in the presence of God. The protocol, required the High Priest, to have a long rope tied to him. In the event, while behind the curtain, if he died, say of a heart attack, who would /could go into the Holy of Holies and retrieve the priest? If someone did, surely they would die. I am sure the story of Uzza, help to reinforce the protocol.
  • None of this applies today, and the closest would be Revelation 22:19 And if anyone removes any of the words from this book of prophecy, God will remove that person's share in the tree of life and in the holy city that are described in this book.
