"You shall follow what is altogether just, that you may live and inherit the land which the LORD your God is giving you. Deuteronomy 16:20 NKJV

Today’s key verse comes near the midpoint of this great book. In it, Moses refers to two of his three favorite mega-themes. These mega-themes begin right away in Deuteronomy and continue to the end.

The three mega-themes are most succinctly stated after the sixth of Ten Commandments: “so that you may [1] live long and [2] that it may go well with you [3] in the land the Lord your God is giving you” (5:16 NIV). They’re echoed again at the end of that chapter: “Then you will [1] live long and [2] prosperous lives [3] in the land you are about to enter and occupy” (5:33 NLT). These three mega-themes appear dozens of times throughout the book, with [3] repeated the most, with all three appearing close together again in 11:8-9, and with Moses missing out on [3].

It’s important to note that Moses is addressing the ancient Israelites. In the New Testament, only [1] is repeated (against the backdrop of possible martyrdom) and both [2] and [3] are moved to heaven (and then to the new heavens and earth). Then again, see Hebrews 11:13-16.

Prayer: Lord, You want me to stop looking around at life here on earth. Instead, I will lift up my eyes to You today.
