'If they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their forefathers, in their unfaithfulness which they committed against Me, and also in their acting with hostility against Me--then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and I will remember also My covenant with Isaac, and My covenant with Abraham as well, and I will remember the land. Leviticus 26:40, 42 NASB
Israel was guilty of all sorts of depravity, including idolatry in various forms and hostility toward God (Leviticus 26:27-33). Not that any sin was good, but idolatry was an especially abhorrent scent in God’s nostrils. Yet, today’s verses say He was willing to remember His covenants with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and relent, if only his people would confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their forefathers.
All of this speaks to God’s covenantal nature. Matthew Henry says as much in his concise commentary: “Among the Israelites, persons were not always prosperous or afflicted according to their obedience or disobedience. But national prosperity was the effect of national obedience, and national judgments were brought on by national wickedness.”
When you think about the sins of your grandparents and parents, and your own sin, have you been thorough in confessing it? Create a list right now of the generational sins in your family, then confess them to God.
Prayer: Lord, as I pray through the list I just created, hear my prayer and remember Your promise to forgive my family.
