Mark 13

28“ Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near.
29 So you also, when you see these things happening, know that it is near—at the doors!
30 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place.

31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

This verse 30 ,,in mark 13 has always puzzled me, the whole chapter in context to what it seems to me, to be speaking about end times, and Jesus return, giving us signs of the times, so that we may know the season, but tnot the exact day or hr.

BUT and that used to be a big BUT, it never made sense to me about verse 30, because generation, always meant to me 10-15 years or life time of person.

So today I felt like I should look of the Greek meaning of generation, and now it is cleared to me, it can mean age, and that fits in perfect for my understanding is Jesus brought us the age of grace, and that is still the age we are in. Thank you Lord Jesus for opening my eyes on this.

In Greek, the word "generation" is most often translated from the Greek word genea (γενεά). It can refer to a single generation of people, a period of time (an age), or a broader group of people with a shared characteristic (like a family or race).

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Genea (γενεά):
This is the most common Greek word used to translate "generation" in both secular and religious texts.

    • A specific group of people living at the same time: This is the most direct translation and refers to a particular period of time.

      • An age or period: It can also refer to a longer period of time, like an era or an age group.
      • A lineage or family: It can refer to a line of descent or a family group.
      • A class or kind of people: It can also describe a group of people who share certain characteristics or traits.

I have seen people build whole doctrines of Jesus has already returned a second time on this verse, no way has Jesus returned a second time yet.
