Want to stand up, step down
'The greatest among you will be your servant.' MATTHEW 23:11
We are used to hearing about celebs who turn up with 'their people'. Security, stylists, PR guys, assistants. The bigger the entourage, the bigger the celeb.
Lots of people dream of 'making it' and most of the dreams would include servants and staff running around at their beck and call. So what does Jesus mean when he says 'The greatest among you will be your servant'; didn't He mean the greatest among will have servants?
Nope, check out the verse again in The Message translation 'Do you want to stand out? Then step down. Be a servant. If you puff yourself up, you'll get the wind knocked out of you. But if you're content to simply be yourself, your life will count for plenty.' Remember how Jesus introduced Himself? 'The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life' (Mark 10:45 NIV), and He practiced what He preached.
Jesus is God; if anyone should get VIP treatment it was Him, yet we read about Him washing the disciples' mucky feet. That's like the star striker cleaning the B team's boots. So who you can you serve today? You might not have to untie their trainers or get a flannel out but how could YOU put others first? Do you want to stand out? Then step down; BE A SERVANT
