Mum's are impressive
'As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.' ISAIAH 66:13
Anna Jarvis was impressed with her mum. So impressed that after she passed away in May 1905 Anna began a campaign to get her accomplishments recognised. One thing led to another and within 3 years Anna and a group of friends had organised the world's first ever Mother's Day service. They thought it would be a pretty popular idea so they booked the biggest venue in town - it held 5000 people - but 15,000 showed up! That was exactly 100 years ago and as we now know the idea really did catch on.
Pastor Chuck Swindoll thinks mums are impressive too: 'As significant as political, military, educational, or religious figures may be, none compare to the impact made by mothers. Their words are never fully forgotten, their touch leaves an indelible impression...the memory of their presence lasts a lifetime. I ask you, who else has that kind of influence?' He's right, nobody has the unique ability to shape a life more than a mum. Think about all the little ways over the years of your life that you've been shaped by that loving influence. Sometimes loving from close by, sometimes loving from a distance.
At that first Mother's Day service Anna Jarvis showed she had a special window into a mother's heart saying, 'A mother's love is new every day.' So how are you going to show your appreciation for that love today?
