Going the distance

'I'VE RUN HARD RIGHT TO THE FINISH, BELIEVED ALL THE WAY. ALL THAT'S LEFT NOW IS...GOD'S APPLAUSE!' 2 TIMOTHY 4:7

Young people tend to live more spontaneous lives than those who are older. Full of energy, looking out for new experiences, with few responsibilities; no wonder so many old people if they had one wish would choose to be young again. We will all change over time and as we do knowing certain things in advance will help, for example:

1) Aging isn't optional but being 'old' is. You can keep a youthful attitude by staying open to new ideas and remembering that you can learn something new every day.

2) Time is a gift. David said, 'Teach us to use wisely all the time we have' (Psalm 90:12 CEV). So much of life is wasted doing things that don't count for anything. How much of your typical day is just wasted time? What can you do about it?

3) Testing times will come. Don't be surprised if you have difficult, painful or stressful situations to go through. Don't let these times make you angry or bitter. Bad health, busted relationships and broken dreams can actually bring about beauty in our lives if we let God teach us how to respond.

4) Laughter revives the soul. You might be fit or foxy now, turning heads as you walk down the street but when Mother Nature and Father Time get through with you, a well-developed sense of humour will come in handy every time you look in the mirror!

Since 'A cheerful heart is good medicine' (Proverbs 17:22 NLT), make sure you approach every day with a sense of fun. Put these things into practice now and you stand a much better chance of going the distance.
