And when He had sent them away, He departed to the mountain to pray. Mark 6:46 NKJV
The Bible tells many stories of great men of prayer, and none was greater than Jesus. The Gospels include several accounts of the Son of the living God praying to His Father in heaven. For example, He prayed at His baptism (Luke 3:21), before choosing His twelve disciples (Luke 6:12), before Peter’s confession (Luke 9:18, at His transfiguration (Luke 9:29), and before He was arrested and crucified (John 17).
But why did Jesus, who was God in the flesh, need to pray? Didn’t He have the authority to do everything He could possibly ask God to do?
Jesus was fully God and fully human. He needed to sleep, eat, and drink water—just like any of us. But to keep Himself ready to do the things He’d come to earth to do, He needed help from His Father in heaven. That means He needed to take regular time to connect from the heart with the Father.
When Jesus prayed, He set an example for each of us of the need for consistent, regular prayer. If Jesus, the Son of God, needed to pray, then we know we need to pray too!
Prayer: Father in heaven, may I never neglect taking time to connect my heart to Yours through prayer. Jesus needed to pray, so I know I need to follow His example and spend regular time with You.
